Beside a helmet do Gen 1 Roadsters need a top? I never use mine but could bring it along. Takes up too much space in the trunk.
Jeff

Haven't heard from CMS yet on this subject so not sure. I would strongly recommend a top if you plan to drive CMS. Normally, it's "top up, windows down" on the road course.

Drags are normally top up, windows up.

Auto Cross is usually anything goes, top down, windows down, helmet recommended but not required, passengers OK.

Why not just buy a helmet ... There not very expensive. Look at it like a gun ... Rather have one and not need it, then need it and not have it.

And on the plus side, you'll only need ONE helmet. Whereas there is no limit to the guns you may want to own. :)

Virginia has a law restricting citizens to one handgun purchase a month (VA members, is this still correct?), and a buddy of mine had a good outlook on it. He said "one gun a month? It's not a law, it's an obligation!" I like his understanding of the law.

I'm shopping for a helmet, and I'd prefer an open face design, but a full-face helmet is also appealing. No way can you talk with a full-face helmet on, but I like the fact that I can really protect my eyes with the shield down.

Anyone here using an open-face helmet?

Are long sleeve shirts/pants and closed toe shoes (women) required for the driving events?

Yes, for men and women, especially on the "roval" and at the drags. Shirts, pants and socks should be cotton or other natural materials.

Auto X is usually more flexible with clothing.

"The latest word from CMS aka Charlotte Motor Speedway is that we'll all need at least Snell 2005 Helmets to drive on their track. No motorcycle helmets and no Snell 2000 helmets will be allowed"

That would mean you need a Snell rating of SA 2005 (that is different from motorcycle ratings of "M 2005 it would have nomex interior a motorcycle helmet does not)

Steve is correct, the terminology is SA 2005, SA 2010, etc. for auto helments.

I have not been told that we need closed face helments from Petty or CMS.

Open face should be fine.

Just be sure you have eye protection when wearing open face helmets.

I'm flying to Charlotte and want to bring my own helmet. Anyone know if this is okay with TSA or the airlines? I couldn't find anything specific on either website. I'm sure it will look unusual in the airport and on the plane when carrying it on. Any one have any experience with bringing a helmet as a "carry on" item?
Thanks

Just don't wear it in the airport or on the plane and I'm sure you will be fine. It'll scan just like everything else.

Personally if I were flying with my helmet.. I'd put it on at the gate and start rocking back and forth in my chair muttering something about crashing... :lmao::lmao::lmao:

You could FedEx or UPS it to the hotel. Although, if you do wear it before going through TSA check, be sure that someone gets a photo and posts it. (Someone other than the local police department.)

Love it! :lmao:

Great thread. Wa salso going to post about helmets today as I have a 2005 but was unsure how to differentiate it from a motorcycle. Will check for the SA.

Should one need to buy one, is there a recommended brand or model for the occasional tracker? Thanks!

As a quick visual check... I think the auto helmets have a yellowish or light color chin strap, should have a tag with SA on the back sticker of the helmet or also on the chin strap... motorcycle helmets have black are M rated...

I regularly fly in the winter with a ski helmet and boots in a carry on ... of course I've not tried wearing it though. I can only imagine the body cavity search that might trigger.

I didn't really want to buy another friggin' helmet but this is what the VOI e-mail says:

Greetings VOI 12 Attendees!
The Invitational is now less than two weeks away and the excitement is really building. With even more people and more Vipers than VOI 11, this is sure to be a spectacular event. As you get ready to go to Charlotte, here are a few things you need to know before the event gets started:

  • Long pants and closed-toed shoes (no Crocs or sandals) are required for the road course and drag strip - no exceptions
  • If bringing a helmet, it must be an automotive Snell 2005 or later helmet - no motorcycle helmets. Open face automotive helmets are fine as long as they are Snell 2005 or later.
  • All Vipers running on the road course must have a passenger seat for the instructor, including race-prepped cars
  • Be sure to check your fluids and tire condition before you leave. If your tires are six years or older, we strongly recommend changing them as do most tire manufacturers. See one of our event sponsors below.

Well I'm registered, I need to find out why I didn't get that note.

Best mothod is to try some on but if that isn't possible you can wrap a tape measure around your head about an inch above your eyebrows. Each helmet manufacturer has a chart that correlates that measurement to helmet size.

Excellent! Thank you!

Helmet ordered! :)

Ended up with this one, now on for $279 - VCA 10% and the free shipping! Hard to beat that when I plan on racing more in the future. And has removable washable liner. I like that feature. :D
