In case you guys find don't like the Waze... there is another option that's really pretty simple.
It's as easy a sending a text to the numbers you want to share your location with.
We all know it's eay to create a group in your contacts on your phone... so the leaders of each caravan would send a "Glympse" or text to everyone in the group and just start driving. Everyone that gets the text can see exactly where that driver is. That's pretty easy if you ask me.

Check it out below;

Waze may not do what we actually want. I found this information on their site.

"You cannot track a wazer. You can be part of the same group, which allows reports from fellow group members to be displayed (when enabled in options).

The wazers seen on the screen are a random sampling, and position are slightly delayed, and updated not in real time. For both performance and privacy reason."

I found an iPhone app that should do exactly what we want. The downside is that it is iPhone only. If someone wants to test, download tracku and send me a PM. You will need my ID number to add me as a friend.

My search shows 2 different Tracku apps. One is Tracku Friend Finder and is free, the other is just callled Tracku and is .99. Which one did you install?

Yeah, I hate it when they have a good idea but not everyone can use it.

That's the nice thing about Glympse (the video above) - it doesn't matter what type of phone (droid, blackberry, apple) and the people using it don't need to download anything at all... except for the person who sends out the invite and wants to be tracked of course.

It's also a free app. I downloaded it and plan on testing it today. My wife has blackberry and I have a droid x... I know, I know we're a mixed marriage :lmao2:
She is not tech savy AT ALL - but she had a great idea. She suggested I send the link to her email, not her text. Then she would have the option of tracking me with the desktop computer at the house OR her phone since she can get email with the phone anyway.

If you watch the video I guess you just download the app, then send the invite to as many as you want to track you, and start driving. They just need to own a phone that is web capable because the link takes them to a server that shows the maps view that shows your postion.
It looks simple.

Mike you have my condolences, now your wife has the ability to extend her reign to every single move you make and will issue orders when she sees fit. I guess the phrase "you're in the army now" could apply in a way here :eater:

Let me know if it works so I can try to download it for my Samsung.

Has anyone found anything that will work? There is tracku, but it is iPhone only. There is also Glympse, which works on many different phones. The downside is that you have to send a text message to anyone you want to share with, and it only lasts for up to 4 hours. You can extend it, but the max is 4 hours at a time. The text messaging is only good if you have other people's cell numbers. Any other tools?

I did try the Glympse a few weeks back and forgot to post results... yes it defaults to 4 hours max but you can manually put in 24hrs or whatever and it just keeps on sending. My wife tracked me fine as I ran around for 10 minutes. It did freeze on her screen for a few minutes until it updated and then worked fine.
One thing I thought was cool is I took a closeup pic of the green sneaky pete on my hood and uploaded that as my avatar so she saw me traveling as a green snake along with my screen name... neat feature.
I never used latitude but maybe somebody here has :dunno:

Rocket62, this actually started with a group gps app (waze). The idea was that anyone who wanted to participate would use the app and join the "voi 12" group and you would be able to track all group members, but it doesn't quite work that way. With Google Latitude, and most others, you need to define all your friends in the app. That could be a bit difficult since we'd have to share everyone's cell phone number or email address. Glympse works in a similar way. Also, from what I've read Latitude doesn't work on the new iOS 6.

Did anyone try Tracku Friend Finder on the iPhone?

Mark,

As I started this post - i am aware what the original intention was and since we can't seem to get WAZE to do what we want (and the fact that I don't have an iphone) was looking for an alternative - even if it required some form email joining as latitude requires - if nothing else for a small group of Vipers.

Rocket, sorry, I didn't go back to see who started the thread. I'm now on Google Latitude, which seems to be working on iOS 6. I'm at voi.markk at gmail dot com. I've sent a friend request to Mad Max.

I've got Mad Max on the map. I've updated my Google picture to be similar to my forum avatar. The space allowed doesn't permit the entire avatar picture to be used.

you can skip searching a "store" and just search (or google) Lattitude and you will see a link to it-the site will recognize you're coming from a moble phone and not only direct you to google.com/mobile/lattitude/ but will then provide you with a link to download the appropriate app based on your phone type (iOS or Android...maybe even blackberry for those still holding ou hope or not able to adapt to touchscreens all thumbs :2tu: I'm on runningsteele @
