P0138 Code issues

Well, took a quick trip up to the local 7-11, and on the way back the engine light popped on. At the same time, the oil temp gauge dropped to 0. Because I was only a couple blocks from home, and the oil preassure and water temps looked good, I kept going for home.

I put the reader on it, and it's a P0138 bank 1 sensor 2. I'm going to go ahead and assume that's the passenger side rear O2 for now. I replaced that one about a month ago due to a burn through on the wiring. That particcular fault caused the 15amp fuse to pop, disabling the reverse lockout solonoid.

So, I cleared the code. The next trip, same thing, P0138 and the oil temp gauge drops to 0.

I've had HF cats, and belangers on it for three years now, this is the first real issue I've had with O2s. Ya'll think I got a bad O2?

I thought bank 1 sensor 2 is driver rear! Bank 1 is the same side as cylinder 1, which is the left front cylinder. You got the wrong one!

Hmmm.... Grrrr.... Well, when I swapped out the passenger rear, I did buy an extra O2. Looks like I'll be swapping out another one :p

Why does this crap always happen to me in the middle of the summer!!! Grrr.

If you install woodhouse engine mounts it seems to limit engine and pipe movement. I have not had any failures with the Ontario club cars and oxygen sensors since I started installing mounts at the same time I do the headers.

More then likely your stock mounts are worn

Good luck

Got em, installed the same time as all the other mods. Figured it would be better to do everything at once rather than keep tearing the car apart. Put in the mounts, belangers, B&M shifter, KW v2s etc.... That was 3 years ago, guess it's just time for the O2s to die this summer :p

I did find the fact that the oil temp gauge dropped to 0 right when the P0138 code kicked off kinda wierd. After I cleared the code, everything was fine until it fired off again, and again no oil temp gauge. Seems like a "shady" kind of way of freaking out an owner & encouraging them to go to the dealership. To tie that gauge to that fault..... I don't see any other reason but to give a false sense of high severity to the engine light. It just strikes me as odd really.

Yeah but Oil Temp? Low oil temp doesn't have the same kind of flag as low oil pressure... you just know the temp is wrong if it's zero after you've been driving!

Yeah, I find it very odd. I guess that because emmisions control is so tightly regulated and such, that code the engine light and the oil temp gauge going to 0 was done to "scare" people into bringing their cars in right away. That's the only thing I can figure about it. I'll get it swapped out this weekend, good thing I got two rear O2s last month :)

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue. Did replacing the O2 sensor fix the problem?

Yes, that particular problem was corrected by replacing the O2 sensor. I suggest wrapping it in some extra thermal wrap at the base where the wires go into the sensor and using a metal tie to secure the wrap. The wrap and the stock thermal sock seems to have kept the wires from burning through any more, and I've made several cross state trips since with no issues.

Thanks. Did you have to replace the oil temp sensor too or did that fix itself with the new O2 sensor?
