Not sure if this is the right forum for it but Im looking for options on a good laptimer. I know most people use apps on their phone but I was also interested to see if there was any other options. Preferably something I could check on the fly.

Harrys Laptimer for the iphone or Aim "Solo" laptimer, its a stand alone unit. I am guessing this is just for some DE or time trial events nothing too serious

The more serious guys I have seen, use Traqmate. I think it's one of the more expensive ones out there, but the guys that are using it are happy as a clam.

If you have an iphone get the app "Harry's Laptimer". It has everything you want including video. All for about $15-

Harry's Lap Timer in the Viper (works pretty well, but does screw up and combine multiple laps sometimes).
Traqmate in the race car (haven't had a chance to use it yet).

A smartphone can be a very useful timer (and data acquisition tool), but you'll want to utilize an external GPS that can sample at a higher (more frequent) rate than the phone's onboard GPS.

Check out my thread. This is somewhat dated info, so there may now be better and/or cheaper alternatives (or better native GPS in the smartphone):

Actually, Tom-Tom makes or made a cradle that fits up to an I Phone 4S. It has an accelerated GPS receiver built into it that makes any of the available track apps for I phone run at warp speed.

I run Harry's Lap timer with the Tom-Tom cradle without an issue. I had heard about the cradle several years ago but was unable to find one here in the States. I could find them from time to time to time in the UK. I got lucky last Spring and found one on Ebay.
