I dropped off my radio/shifter surround at a body shop yesterday to have them painted Snakeskin Green. The painter just called me to say he may not be able to paint them because the surface has some kind of rubberized material on it? He said its almost like a wrap.

Can anyone tell me how you/your body shop painted the center console? I asked why he can't sand it down and he said it may take him a couple hours to do. He mentioned using paint stripper, but doesn't want to damage the plastic. The guy has been in business for over 20 years, so he's not a rookie at painting.

Sand paper would be my first guess it can't be that hard it scratches pretty easy, I hate when I take a part to some one and they come up with every excuse why it can't be done

I ordered a black one to have just the gauge area painted and had the same thing. That laminate needs to be removed then they can Prime and paint as normal.

Yeah, there's some variety of "soft touch" coating to it (I believe that's the factory term at least). On cars with a lot of miles you can see this peeling up sometimes. I don't think it's as bad as the old gen 1 and 2 dash stuff, but it's still annoying. People used to use oven cleaner on the old stuff to get it off, but I haven't heard any recommendations for the newer dashes. I'm sure there's some trick out there since a lot of people get them painted.

I had this stuff on my Supra dash that I had painted, I sanded it all off, it took a long time though. That was back in my college days so I had plenty of time to burn

I seem to remember someone used oven cleaner to remove the factory coating. When I did mine I just used 220 wet and dry and worked my way up to 800.

Get the parts back from him and do the sanding yourself. Then take it back to haven't painted, I would hope sanding of some kind is part of painting almost anything that doesn't already have body paint on it.

Oven cleaner or 3m adhesive remover works well, I just finished cleaning up my spare set and had it painted viper red...

I had a scratched up silver 1 in my 05'. Had it painted yellow last summer. Not thrilled with appearance (to much yellow inside) but it was an easy sand and paint for a local body shop.

I'll post the results when I pick the pieces up hopefully Friday. I also have a set of fender emblems they are painting SSG. I'm stopping by the powdercoater tomorrow to see how close of a match to SSG they can make as well. Along with the new wheels that arrived today and Euroteck lip I have to install, it will look like a new car!

It should not take that long to sand down... I bought a spare and sanded off the rubberized finish in an hour or so (I am not a professional painter) and then painted GTS Blue myself....... Sounds like maybe he just doesn't want to spend his time on it?

That turned out nice. Pics after install?
Still don't have my car back...the motor was supposed to finally be completed yesterday, so I'll hopefully have it back next week. I picked up the pieces yesterday though.
