replace stereo with tablet

I am thinking about replacing the crappy stereo in my 06 viper with a tablet. Has anyone out there done this?

Here is the list of parts I think I will need.

1) Tablet, thinking nexus 7 or some other 7" that I can utalize data sharing with.

2) Some sort of line driver/pre-amp I can run RCA's out of for factory amps. I am thinking about this one:

3) I am on the fence about hardwire or not, but bluetooth would probably be cooler. So, I need a universal bluetooth adapter, like:

Obvously I will need to cut up my dash some to pull this off. I am currently looking for a used piece I can hack on instead of my OEM piece that is in perfect shape. I want to keep the contours of the factory stereo opening but make it a little taller to accomidate the tablet. This is a good oportunity for me to try out some fiberglass work. There is also some issues with the sound comming out analog vs. digital, but I realize that the sound quality is never going to be amazing in a viper.

why tablet over aftermarket deck?? well, I don't like the look of a single din in the 1.5 din opening. I also can pull this off for about the same amount as a decent aftermarket double din stereo or OEM nav. Plus, I am going to try to make it magnet backed so I can pop off the tablet at any time and take it with me. Another cool thing would be hooking up a OBD dongle and using some of the cool aps out there for car diagnostics. I have a lot to figure out still, but I will make a "how to" thread if/when I do this.

Go for it! I plan to do this in my Dodge Ram at some point. I think having a regular head unit would be simplest for all the functions but I know other that have tablets installed in vehicles so it shouldn't be a major issue. Once you get all the wiring figured out it will be well worth the trouble!

I have been doing a ton of research for this. There seem to be two though processes. The first is to use an aftermarket or factory stereo and connect the tablet through the headphone jack or use bluetooth. The second approach is using the tablet as a stand alone unit. Both approaches need a lot of work to make a factory like system.

Sony makes a pretty good head unit with tablet controls. Here is a video that demonstrates it

I'm still on the fence on what direction I want to go. Buy before I can proceed, the wife said I need to sell some stuff laying around the house to fund this project as its not "necessary". I like the idea of having a conventional head unit behind the tablet so I can take the tablet in the house if I want. One hurdle with the Sony unit is volume control. It comes with a remote so I might get a IR repeater and mount it somewhere on the dash so i can get a line of sight with the remote. Plus it will make life so much easier with wiring. I will need to mount the stereo inside the dash but it shouldn't be a problem with a little fab work.

They have a double din radio called the app radio it's pretty cool I just bought one just haven't installed yet, but it can mirror you android or I phone. It's looks alot cooler with android phone.

Why did I not do this. I just put in my Pioneer AVIC N4 and this looks so much better... an Ipad Mini would definatley fit without too much trimming I think

The fit part isn't an issue. Most people or shops with a little fabrication skills can trim plastic to make it fit. The hard part is incorperating it with the car to have a seamless operation. The double din units out there do this well. I wish the vipers had steering wheel controls. It would solve the volume issues. I guess im old school and like having real buttons for volume. I don't want to swipe the tablet or mess with a touch screen just to raise or lower the volume.

Lets not forget, the main reason for doing a tablet is real time engine diagnostic's and navigation. Here is a pretty cool video of TORQUE, the app I will probably use.

Just ordered a OBD2 Bluetooth for the Torque app, will let u know if it works well with the Viper.. If not it should work with one of the other toys!

I does NOT work with the viper. I don't know why, it works fine with my Honda ridgeline. So I guess I will return it and try another one. Gggrrr...

I am still moving forward with this. I purchased a 32gb Nexus 7. The tablet is way cool and it should be pretty sweet. I have tried out a couple navigation programs and they blow the OEM dodge stuff out of the water.

Still waiting on delivery... but there is a forum member here with a Green ARC that's using the Torque app....Maybe he can chime in with his/her settings?
