911 4s or viper

BE OBJECTIVE PEOPLE!! lol.

So I was wondering what some of you guys think between the differences for these 2 cars.

The viper I want is 145k and I can get it for like 139k and the porsche is 156k and I can get it for 142-144k. It pretty much has every option, same as the viper. For a DD weekend car that will be tracked MAYBE once a year what do you guys think?

I am surprised you have 137 posts here and still are not sure? Both are great cars, you just have to decide which crowd you want to run with. Are you prowling the Porsche forums too ;)

If you want a car that you see everywhere you go that disapears on the road, get a Porsche, if you want a monster that gets looks and stares no matter where you go, the choice is obvious. The Viper. I've had both, the Porsche is a fun car, the Viper is a different beast.

this is exactly what pulls me to the viper over the porsche. I just wanted to hear other opinions if people thought the same or different.

For a great every day and 2-3 times a year track car there is NO comparison - get the 4S. For a car that is compromised for daily driving but HAS NO comparison - get the Viper. Allan

Means the car will be driven mostly on weekends but if I have to go somewhere on a weekday which requires me to drive then I will drive.

You'll probably be fine with the Viper depending on the climate in your area. The Porsche will give you more peace of mind if you don't have another car because it just blends in better. Viper all the way if it's just a weekender.

There are really only 2 things keeping me from making my mind. One is the viper exhaust. For a v10 made by lamborghini I'd want it to sound more **** like a lambo or a porsche and less like a ford raptor. Also I still need to test drive it to see how it rides and the damn dealers need to let me lol. This is pathetic I went to the porsche dealer they threw me the keys to the turbo s and 4s no questions ask. The sales guy didn't even come in the car with me for the test drive.

Had several Porsches over the years (Cayman, 911TT, 911 GTS).....and have sold them all to buy more Vipers. :) Seriously, it comes down to personal taste. While the 911 is a great driving car, the new Gen V Viper is just as exceptional IMO. It is still a little rough around the edges, but that's what I like about it. The Porsches all got boring after a while.

For the dealership experience, Porsche has that over Dodge, SRT. There are a few exceptional SRT dealers, nothing like Porsche levei of service in my area, Northern Ohio. For a weekend car the Viper is the better choice. If there is some DD involved then I would go the Porsche.

get the P car for Mon-Sat and use the Viper on Sundays. I shopped the new C4S against the new Granturismo Sport and liked the Maserati better for the same dough.

The Carrera 4s is very, very weak in a straight line. Ask me how I know. That engine has no torque...

Turbo S then? lol. That is my only problem with porsche. I wish the turbo is was 156k and not a carrera 4S be that expensive. I wonder if anyone is changing out their stock exhaust on the viper? Has anyone made an aftermarket exhaust for the new viper yet? I know mopar has 2 of them I wonder if anyone has gotten them yet.

Id love to know what options you are picking to get a 4S to $156k, what you just click every option in the configurator?

Well lets go through then lol. First I pick amaranth red with black wheels adds about 2k right there. Then I get 14 way power sport seats will full leather beige interior adds another 3.5k. For options I get the premium package plus with power sports seats adds 2300 and burnester audio package for 5290. It then forces me to choose my headlight option and I get the full LEDs for 3k. I get park assist front and rear and sunroof in glass adds another 3k. Now performance, I get PDK, ceramic brakes, PDCC with PASM suspension, power steering plus, sport chrono package, sport exhaust. All carbon fiber in the interior. Then I want the gauges to be red and the sport chrono to be red.

And the price is 156k.

I mean I could go with a black car, with a bose system, and that would take out about 3k.

Same here. I've owned 3 Porches' and although they were very nice cars, nothing at all like the Viper. It's the closest thing there is to rock star status when driving the Viper. Pictures will be taken everywhere you drive and park it and people will come up to you asking questions... Been this way for me with every generation Viper I've owned... no joking. The exhaust note does take some getting used to but it certainly fits the cars personality which I love. People like hearing you start the car, hell I fall in love with it every time I start it. Wasn't that way in the Porsche. The GTS exhaust note isn't as deafening although it does have a drone at certain rpm's. Still I wouldn't trade it for anything. I recently completed a race day where I drove a Ferrari scuderia, Lambo Aventador and Nissan GTR, all were great cars but it made me want to hop right back in my Viper when I got home. Good luck deciding.

So then do you rather have a gen 5 or a turbo s? If I could find a red turbo S with all the carbon fiber, black rims, red gauges, red seat belts, and black interior then I'd get it over the viper lol. But that won't happen. In fact all the used and even new turbo S on cars.com are really boring looking.

Well if I could get the turbo S I want the choice would be simple. But there is no way I will find a used turbo S with my options. And if I built a new one even with the discount it would be around 180k which is way too much over what I am willing to pay. I don't think you would say a carrera 4s would be better than a viper?

Yes,I am only talking about new 911TTS with the PDK. Regular 911 ,non turbo, get a Gen.5 for sure..

Aren't these two cars polar opposites in every way? They're so different I can see someone owning both to satisfy different driving/ownership needs, but to be choosing between them for a single car owner seems way off to me. I'd try different cars until you're able to determine what's important to you so you can focus your search. I love the Viper, but I would think your Shelby Mustang was a far better choice for your single car needs.

Can you really live with your only car having very limited carrying capacity, 2 seats, very loud personality and exhaust, poor fuel economy, and maybe a bit awkward to get in and out of for both you and your passengers? Is it going to be suitable for your winter driving, as limited as you anticipate that might be, and will you mind subjecting the car to that? I have three very different sports cars just to satisfy my varying sports car needs, and none of them would be suitable for winter use or as my only vehicle. And if you're tempted to try should you buy used to avoid a big hit at resale time?

Well let me go into what I want out of a car because when you go by my criteria you will see they are not so opposite.

The first thing I care about is speed. Plain and simple. I am spoiled by my 660 shelby so I want something just as fast. But when I say just as fast I mean just as fast as my butt dyno can tell. For example I drove a 2013 GTR and to me both the shelby and GTR same just as fast even though I know the GTR is way faster.

Next is looks. The viper is number 1 in my book right now in looks under 200k. Then I care about refinement. Given the build quality of the viper to me it appears to be refined. After driving the shelby I have realized I am willing to give up more hp and performance for more refinement. After that is the interior. This is a big deal for me. And again the viper has the best interior. I mean it came from ferrari. Then the exhaust. Unfortunately here is where the viper loses. It sounds like a ford raptor basically. The porsche has a much better sport exhaust sound. And last but not least and I can emphasize this enough is ride comfort. It gets real old constantly driving a bumpy ass car. The shelby is way too bumpy. It just gets so old when every time you drive it just bounces you off the street. I can't comment on this with either car as well. But this is where the viper scares me because it uses the same shocks as my shelby. Also the car needs to have an extensive amount of carbon fiber in the interior and exterior. Also I like adjustability. I want to be able to adjust everything if possible.

Now to address your questions. Yes I can live with my car have limited carrying capacity. I don't really put anything even in my shelby. Plus the girlfriend has an SUV if I really need to haul anything I always use her car anyways. I like a loud personality, and I don't care about fuel economy because I'm only driving on weekends really. Yes the viper is awkward to get in and out of it, I don't know how some old people do it when me in my 20s has a hard time with it. The viper will be fine for my type of winter driving which is 20 -30 degrees on dry roads or maybe when it is raining. I can't really avoid the rain with the shelby because I have to drive it every single day, but with the viper I will be able to since really it is only required on weekends to drive if that even. I didn't drive my shelby in the snow when it snowed 3x this year and I waited for the salt to get off the road before I drove it even after.

If you looked at my shelby you would think it just came off the dealer lot because I have it hand washed every other week and extensively detailed twice a year. My car probably looks better than most people who drive their shelbys 2000 miles a year. I'm super OCD. And to top it all off my car is black!! lol. Besides with what ever car I get, I am literally putting clear bra over the entire car anyways. So I'm not worried about the paint. If I could afford to get both I would but I can't. So I need a car that can do all in one. Obviously I would get a ferrari or lambo if I could afford it but I can't. 145k is my strict budget where as I can comfortably afford the car. Past that and I am pushing myself and I don't like living like that.

Can't compare them. Anywhere near $150k is ridiculous for a non-turbo Porsche (not including track models). There is a reason they are one of the most, if not the most, profitable car companies. Only option IMO is a New Turbo (not S) which should be in the same price range if you don't go crazy with the options. Other than that, Viper hands down.

Well If I don't go crazy with the options then car is boring and of course the viper would be the winner lol. Every porsche on cars.com new and used pretty much is boring. And I understand now why because when you put all the nice stuff the price becomes insane. But if I'm going to get the porsche I want it with the options I want. It's just ******** I can't find a turbo S with any options they are all pretty much stripped. Most likely from people stretching themselves to afford them which is why probably every single one of the used ones have hardly any options.

And of course you can compare them. The goal is simple. Which is the better all around car for 150k. Which sounds better, build better, looks better, performs better. These are all ways to gauge any car. The only cars you can't compare is say a sports car to a truck or a sports car to an SUV. But sports car to sports car of course you can compare them.

That is like saying you can't compare a bugatti, pagani, koenigsegg. Of course you can. They are all 1 million dollar cars that you can bet the buyers are comparing those 3 and thinking which they would like the most.

EDIT: Also the porsche wins in being able to actually see out the front of it too lol. These things all matter in a street driven car.

It really all just boils down to what you're comfortable with and what suits your personality. What ***** is that you're having a hard time getting to test drive the Viper to see if it fits the bill. Maybe some generous owner of a new one in your area might be nice enough to offer you a ride in theirs? From what I've read so far I'd say it seems like the Porsche would probably be the better fit for you, but I think it might be a little bland and lack some personality. A Viper might not be the fastest car on the road, but when you drive one you certainly feel like it is. It's just a different experience from a lot of other performance cars.

Personally, I daily drive my stock gen 3 rain or shine nearly year round and don't mind one bit. If it snows I'll leave it in the garage, but as soon as the snow is off the roads I'm back on them. The car is almost entirely composite, aluminum, stainless, and highly coated and corrosion resistant steel (frame is galvanized and e-coated from what I understand). I wash it generally every weekend or two as well, so whatever salt might linger is usually rinsed off farily quick. 10k miles in 7 months of ownership and it looks and drives the same as the day I bought it (minus some extra wear on the front fascia). People think I'm crazy, but it just doesn't bother me driving it in all conditions. I've had it in torrential rain more than once and it's never given me any trouble. I've driven it in 20 degree weather without any issues either. About the only thing I ever carry in the car is myself to work, so storage space is a non issue. Even on a weekend trip I'll just throw a duffle bag in the trunk with a change of clothes and I'm good to go. I think the car is plenty comfortable and easy to drive. Getting in and out is a little different compared to other cars, but not a deal breaker by any means for me. Everyone is different and will have different tastes and requirement in their cars. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to have a few different ones for different occasions. Others make due with just one. Find what stirs your passion and have fun with it, whatever it may be. The only one who can decide what car is the right one is you.
