Pathetic, this is the deathblow to the Viper. I give it another year or so and Viper is killed, dead, no mas. Overpriced mediocracy combined with crap customer service. No excuses Ralphy. Let the rebates begin. It's a sad story for the Viper heritage.

At this point I'm thinking the base Viper should have been the TA. SRT would have taken a risk, but it would have been having much better impact in the media.

The amount of development and refinement that a volume ride like the C7 gets is probably multiples of the time and investment that go into a car like the Viper. Not that the SRT boys aren't good.....but if you can dedicate 3-4x the number of people, testing time and refinement work to a car that's expected to sell 50,000+ units.....its likely to be better sorted when it hits showrooms than one which is engineered and built to support 2000 unit per year.
Agreed, SRT does not have nearly the same budget. But they still have the resources to have made a better 1st impression.

I think most here have respect for the Corvette. You get the few dummies who hate everything but what they personally own.

The C7 high performance variant will be a complete monster.

Agreed.

In all fairness to the Viper, the one consistent theme in the vast majority of these automotive rags is that they just don't seem to have driver's with a big enough set to drive the car. I wonder if they are intimidated by the reputation or does the car just feel squirrely at the limits:dunno: I have a feeling that a guy like Farnbacher would destroy any of the times these wannabe's are producing.

LOL, you guys trip me out, let's see some Viper owners go out and go faster. Even the fastest amateur guys here in Gen IV ACR's on hoosiers are slower than Randy in the TA on Corsas. This guy was in the ballpark or Randy's times. 9 of 10 (maybe 99 or 100) Viper owners won't be within 10 seconds of Randy on a circuit, or 5-6 seconds of the editor from Edmunds. 1:24 at willow springs is FAST.

I guess maybe that means SRT should have made the car easier to drive, but then the chest beaters wouldn't have an excuse or be able to use macho bravado to put the blame elsewhere.

The C7 might be close, but the Viper is still faster. Plus, the Gen V is just starting off. It's been available for maybe 5 months...?

Plus, both Car and Driver and Automobile Magazine have pictures or Videos of Gen Vs at their office. There may be a series of new reviews on their way and it might fare better. Ralph Gilles and SRT are really dedicated to the Viper, they are no doubt working hard to sort out the issues on a tiny budget relative to all of their competition.

Plus, this isn't bad review for the Viper:
"This isn't merely a car, it's a life-altering event. It's riveting and there is nothing else like it in the automotive universe."
"And the Viper was scandalously quick, making it around the 1.6-mile Streets of Willow course in a stunning 1 minute, 23.9 seconds. It's a ripper."
"But the Viper is actually oddly wonderful on the street."
"every time it's on the road it's a one-car parade. It's a car that feels alive from the heft of the shifter to the heat from its side exhaust. This car doesn't take you for a ride, it demands you pay attention and get involved in the driving experience."

These are outstanding traits and they are getting harder to find in cars as every new generation of Porsche, Corvette, Ferrari, etc are born.

Not everyone will like it, but that has always been the point.

In the drag race, the viper's 1/4 mile in this test was 11.73 vs the corvette's 12.39, nearly a second quicker. The Viper also got 124 MPH trap vs the vette's 113 MPH, an 11 MPH difference which is quite large.

In two other tests, the skidpad and the slalom, the vette and viper were essentially tied and it's likely that a more aggressive driver could have posted substantially better times in the Viper than the vette. In braking the Vette did a lot better by posting a 99-ft distance vs the vipers 110 ft.

SRT isn't buying ads for the viper (though it should); GM buys ads in just about every publication - easy to do when you still have $20 billion in taxpayer welfare to spend.

The Viper just looks so much better than the vette in this video. This is not an apples to apples comparison but I will say that you can build a Z51 with performance exhaust and selective ride control for like $58k and they already have discounts so it should be interesting to see how quickly they come to the table with a widebody and more hp for what maybe another $20k. SRT is going to have to come up with a clean sheet design with a rear transaxle at some point or they just won't be competitive at any price point.
Link to what dealer is discounting C7's today ........I might order one ......waiting-

Why did the Vette do so good on scrawny 245 tires up front ? When this first came out the Vette guys were up in arms, no way to make the C7 handle with those tiny tires...
Yes the tire compound was developed specifically in conjunction with all other parameters, much lower unsprung weight, weight distribution, the Ediff is a major player in laying down power in corners, the PTM that
comes with the Mag shocks, auto rev match on shifts, all these systems integrate seamlesly along with
many, many years of experience that GM has with all these electronic controls on the Vette's.

Remember that this is the first Viper with a lot of nannies....sure Dodge has experience with minivan and passenger car nannies, but not in the Viper.

I love what the new C7 can do, a little overweight, by 200 pounds, but killer car for $60k. I am seriously thinking of getting one. Love my 97 GTS, and also a recent new toy I just got, a 2000 Ferrari 360 Modena coupe. All great cars in different ways....
The Gen 5 Viper looks great, has good bones, give it a year or two of development to sort out the newness,
and they willrefine some of the rough edges, it takes time, Vette is years ahead in that area.

It's the Pirelli's guys. No amount of money or Ferrari influence should have ever allowed SRT to switch to them. The Michelin's are simply an unbeatable street tire.

Corvette is a great car for the money.....However, to me...the Viper is so much more exciting, unique , and rare....and provides a multiude of unique feelings that you just cant get from any corvette....

Once I read this I stopped browsing other comments, well-put lad! :2tu::headbang:
