If both cars were equal value which is entirely possible I might actually lean toward the C7 only because I have a classic with my GTS and it would be nice to also have a more current sports car.

It's funny you ask that. I was actually shopping for a C2 when my neighbor put his Viper (now my GTS) up for sale. I resisted for a long time until he took me for a ride, then I was hooked. To me the GTS had the feel, the 'soul' if you will, that a 40 year old 'Vette had. It has a vintage car feel with ECM and fuel injection. The Gen V, while a great car, is completely different in that regard. It is modern and up to date but that isn't what I want in my weekend toy.

I was actually shopping for a 1970 SS big block Chevelle to recapture the car I bought at 16 1/2 years old. I totally agree on the classic feel with modern updates. I don't agree totally on the GenV. It still looks like a classic and from what I can tell in the reviews so far it still has some 'soul' . I still like the whole 8.4 liter thing it has going on:2tu:

Seems like mostly a pricing decision here, not a desirability decision. If someone offered you an even trade for your Gen 2 for a new Gen 5, how many would still say no? While some would keep their Gen 2 for various reasons, I'd say the majority would trade. Also, MSRP on my ordered 2013 was $119K, and that was after adding in options. Base base price is under $100K. Not $150K.

As for the 1970 Chevelle SS 454, I've owned/restored mine for about 5 years now and still love it. It gets more attention on the highway than my Viper.

I wish i would have taken some polaroids of my Chevelle:rolaugh: Red/White and black int. I sold it when i was 19 in 1979 and people I run into ask me if I still have it. That was the car to have back then but I'm glad I went with the GTS. Yours looks to be the exact car in the brochure in 1970:2tu:

I was thinking about selling my Gen II after I drove the Gen V at VOI... I really liked it. I would get the base car in yellow w/ the track pack. The new car is a better car in every way stock for stock (except in the looks department)

After thinking about it more, I bought my GTS becuase it is one of the best looking cars ever made (IMHO) and a real dream car. I know I'd regret selling it. I still want a Gen V, but not going to sell my GTS for one - so it will be some time before I get into one.

Great thread.
I love both of my GTSs and won't give them up for anything.
However, a black Gen V would go nicely with my GTSs.
Maybe one day I'll be able to buy one.

I call the new Viper a Gen 11 RESTO MOD VIPER...........It is a beauty and I strongly disagree with those that are saying that they think the new Viper has reduced the value of the Gen 11....I feel it is the other way around.....I think it has caused the Gen 11 to be more demandable then ever and the value to go up.....:headbang: :D

Never say never or a Viper until I die. I traded mine for a fully loaded 2002 575M with 3000 miles. Ended up costing me less than a new stripper GTS. GTS Bruce now in an F car.

I thought I would revive this thread now that the GenV's have been out a while and we know more about them. I am crazy about the GenV and could have one tomorrow if I sold my GTS but I still can't bear the thought of selling it so I will just wait a while... Anyone change their position on this or rethinking it ?

No. I am happy with my zero monthly payment Viper. I like the GEN V and they are growing on me with each one I see in real life. However they are way too over priced for my pockets. I'd rather turbo my GTS.

According to 2 different people at the gas station I own a Gen V. What a deal: The car turned into a Gen V and I kept $70k in my pocket for boat mods and maintenance!

I have 40,000 miles of (aggressive driving, I was 20 years old when I bought it, use your imagination) seat time on a 97 GTS. I have recently put about 250 miles (mix of city, country, and serious canyon roads) on a rental 2013 launch edition. I agree with the RESTO MOD comment above, it really does feel like that is the case. Then V is a better car, and I don't mean better in terms of faster, or more reliable, or more technology, or more accessible, I mean it is everything a II is and more except for the widowmaker factor and the looks dept (I believe the II still looks better).

Of course you can instantly kill yourself in a V, but if you really know what you are doing, the car will say "I am going to kill you" and then kill you. A II is not like that (at least in stock geometry and wheels), a II is a true widowmaker car. That is honestly part of the appeal of it to me, it is the only car that has ever really scared me, it is my "Eleanor", the only one I have ever been permanently afraid of in terms of aggressive public-road driving. The problem is that in the spirit of self-preservation, you can't fully appreciate a II on canyon roads, I'm not saying drive 10/10, I'm saying even driving 8/10 in a II can be a nail-biting endeavor. Believe me when I say, I have done things in a II, that in retrospect, were simply ludicrous (such as a 85 mph turn in a 2 lane each side intersection on original pilot sport cup tires...), so this isn't a case of some girly man preferring the one with traction control.

I can understand the financial arguments, and I can understand the looks arguments, but I would suggest really driving a V extensively before saying never, the V is a true, true successor to my favorite car, the II GTS.

I could never afford a new 130k car and basically agree with everything you wrote. if I could afford the gen V then there is NO reason not to have a 40k GTS along side it. However, that is not the case with me and I am perfectly happy having a truly fast and iconic Gen II ACR. Looks and styling are very important to me in a viper and while the Gen V is damn close; it's not a Gen II GTS. However if I could give up my gen II for a Gen V then I would because it is a better car in almost everyway with almost as good aesthetics. I do think I would miss the "feel" of the rawness of the Gen II alongside the looks as well.....but that's about it.

I agree, 130k is steep (although I think one could be done for a 105k sticker that would meet my needs), the financial aspect is as good a reason as any to be in a II. Frankly having both does make sense if finances allow it, they are not totally redundant.

The II has some things the (stock) V simply cannot have, such as a direct throttle linkage, and for the 96 and 97 cars, an interesting cam with some great mid-range characteristics. The II is a collectible car already in my opinion, odds are they aren't going to dip below $40K-ish for a nice example, I could one day see them as being looked upon the way we see people looking at original cobras (albeit probably a lot less valuable just given production numbers) today. The V is going to depreciate, a lot, in the future, unless something terrible happens and production is halted soon.

However financial and aesthetics aside: For people who haven't driven a V and think it is softer, less raw, less of a Viper than a II, I strongly, strongly disagree. Take out a track-pack SRT and spend some quality time with it, in some ways it is even more raw than a stock II (19inch/18 low profile tires mean a stiffer ride, much stiffer chassis means you feel a lot more through the suspension and steering, and a more aggressive stock exhaust for starters).

The II is a great classic already, and the V is what I believe is a fitting modern evolution to a car that already had so many things right.
