My Gen V at Thunderhill Raceway

I took my Viper out on the track for the first time. I went to Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA for a Hooked on Driving track day. I tracked the Camaro there for a weekend, it's a track that I feel comfortable at and has almost no walls to hit. Perfect for the Viper's maiden voyage.

The car: My Viper GTS is 100% stock, with the exception of the Motul 600 brake fluid and 15W-50 oil to handle the 95 degree weather at Thunderhill. I also had an aggressive alignment done, -2.1 degrees front camber, -0.9 degrees rear. The stock alignment was pretty aggressive as well, -1.6 degrees front, -1.3 degrees rear camber.
I had 1,200 miles on the odometer, just broken in. I decided to run the Corsas. They were brand new with 170 miles on them by the time that I arrived to the track. No time to perform the recommended heat cycle, which is extremely impractical if you perform it as recommended. I drove the track with ESC in Sport Mode and the dampers in Race Mode. Never did I feel that the traction and stability control was intervening too much. Fantastic job on the tuning of ESC, absolutely no complaints! Never felt the need to back it off any further.

Learning the Viper's limits: Okay, let me just say that this thing is a freakin' monster at the track! I've tracked ZR1s at Spring Mountain and the Viper is a very different animal. On my warm up lap I nearly ran over the apex cone on a high speed corner, the turn in on the Viper is immediate! You turn the wheel, and the Viper goes exactly where you point it! Impressive. Once calibrating my brain to the Viper's superior turn in, I could drive the line with precision. After feeling out the Viper in the first session, I drove it hard the next. First off, the Viper is damned fast. I am bouncing off of the rev limiter in 4th at 142 MPH on the main stretch, that's nearly 20 MPH faster than my Camaro! The acceleration is so immediate that I have to drive the Viper very differently than the Camaro.

School of hard knocks: Between turns 6 and 8, I can go WOT with the Camaro, because with the right line turn 7 can be straightened out to the point that you don't have to lift until just before turn 8. Well, I guess I didn't have the perfect line because my car's ass end suddenly jumped out just after turn 7. After hearing a few horror stories about turn 8, I decided to bail and push two feet in. I slid off of the track into the infield at over 100 MPH, mowing the weeds sideways before the car miraculously straightened itself. I was able to drive onto the track again after turn 8 while still moving at a fast clip, I'll give credit to the ESC for that one. That was some scary ****. Okay, respect the Viper, it will bite you if you exceed it's limits. I got a few tears in the clear bra and probably a few small paint chips, but they are on the rocker under the side pipes, so they don't really show. Luckily the rest of the car is still pristine.

I shook it off, and over the next four sessions became more comfortable with the Viper. After feeling the car out, I was able to precisely place the car on the line, driving very close to it's limits and with comfort. I think that Randy Pobst exaggerated when he said the Viper dances around when pushed hard. The only time I find it dancing is when I am threshold braking hard before a corner, at the limits of the tires. This car handles exceptionally well.

As for the results, I believe that I was turning the fastest laps in the Advanced Group C. I was able to pass a number of very fast cars including a McClaren MP4-12C, a GT3, a couple of ZR1s, a Saleen S7, a 430, but the one that gave me the most satisfaction was catching this Ferrari 458 Challenge car on full slicks. This is not a street legal car, it is gutted, race prepped and slammed to the ground. Last time I tracked with him I had my Camaro, I had to get out of his way as fast as I could because he was so much faster than me. He seemed untouchable last track event. Not this time, I reeled him in corner by corner.

In my last session, I turned a number of 2:06 lap times, with a best of 2:05.4, and there are spots on the track that I am lifting where I think I could be faster. What an absolute rocket ship this Gen V is! Not bad for the Viper's maiden voyage. The production car record at this track is held by an '08 Viper ACR at 2:01.01. Here's my fastest lap. I'm still figuring out the timing software, so you have to subtract the times when I pass the start/finish line to get the lap time.

Todd, very nice run. Thunderhill was my first track day last January and it was a blast! Can I ask what software you are using for the track layout and G meter on your video? Thanks. Jeff

This is pretty remarkable for a first outing. Your car is barely broken in and will probably be noticeably faster after a few thousand more miles. There is likely a lot of time left in that car just wit further break-in, sorting out the line, and figuring out what the car really likes.

Amazing that you were able to pass that 458 on slicks! Which begs the question, if you can take a brand new car to the track for the first time and outrun McLaren MP4-12Cs, race-prepped 458s, ZR1s, and a Saleen S7 (which has a serious power to weight ratio), why is anyone complaining about performance? Part of the success may be operator related as well ;).

It's good that you went and did the alignment. That help's a lot. You might want to try more aggressive brake pads next. I got Carbotech XP12's on my ACR . It helped a good amount. Especially at a hard braking track like Laguna Seca. Nice video. I gotta get my butt out to Thunder Hill one of these days. Glad you had a great time..

thats the way to put a heat cycle on the tires. glad you had fun.

I am not exxagerating when I say that this was the most fun I've had in years!

Speaking of the Corsas, they were fantastic. However, I only ran six 20 to 25 minute sessions, 3 of which I drove hard. You can see from the pic that my right front is in bad shape already. I will rotate it left to right but think I'll only get one more track day out of them. One row is almost completely gone. Disappointing for how much they cost. If anyone with more experience than me can comment on how that tire looks, I'd appreciate some feedback.

Definitely switching to Michellin Pilot Sport Cups or Hoosier R6s after these are gone.

TrackAddict Pro HD is what I used on my iPhone 5. Phone mount was too wimpy so it allowed it to vibrate. It worked well but not great. It recorded all laps correctly except my fastest lap! It combined that lap with the previous one, which is why the timing shown is for two laps. It also has a really cool looking speedo that you can display, until you realize it's out if sync by a couple of seconds and isn't accurate.

I'm going to try Harry's Lap Timer next outing, or something else. I've heard that Harry's can interface to a high accuracy GPS, so I'll look into it.

If you didn't overdo it at least once and have a little off track excursion, you weren't pushing hard enough. You need to find the limits, and sometimes that means going past them.

I completely agree, I honestly did not know how close to the edge I was until I stepped over. And after talking with the coaches about it, I learned a better line. But I've also slowed down through that section of the track, lol. Fear is healthy.

Thanks Nick. Like you felt compelled to see for yourself what the car is really like in the real world, I just needed to get it on the track and break through the controversy on how it handles on the track.

It is not as forgiving as my Camaro when pushed too hard, but its limits are much higher. But this idea that Motor Trend says that you have to work hard to drive it I adamantly disagree with. It may be that SRT sent them an improperly aligned car for their latest test like they did with the one that had massive rear toe out (ZR1 Vs. Viper comparo). Sadly it wouldn't surprise me. I was concerned enough that I had my car aligned just before this track outing. The factory alignment was fine.

But back to my point. This car is fantastic when driven hard. Just exceptional. I can only imagine what it will be like with some more seat time and a set of Hoosiers.

Yes definitely to try some track pads. I can't say I felt any significant fade, the Stoptechs were solid. But with Hoosiers or at Laguna Seca it would be nice to not have to give the brakes a second thought.

Thunderhill is a kick. Thank god I went off track there instead of Seca or Sonoma, lol. Really nothing to hit except for the splitter that came off of the Boss 302 that spun off of the track in front of me. Yikes, I almost went off track just trying to avoid that thing, dead center in the racing groove.

Did you take a pic of the G meeter ? I'm curious to compare with mine as I got a peak of 1.48 left and 1.25 right, but dont think I pushed near the limits of the car with ESC full on.

At least you're not like the wine+cheese types, who keep their Ferrari in the garage behind velvet ropes.

Great driving, glad the car was working good for you.

2:05 on full tread tires is moving!! I'm guessing it was close to 100 degrees out there.....more normal temps will probably lower lap times and help the tires last a little longer.

One other question Todd, now that you have run both the regular pzero and corsas, did you notice any difference in straight-line grip in 1st and 2nd? I was amazed by how well the trackpack SRT put down it's power in the lower gears and I'm wondering if that is the corsa or the chassis in general. Now that the trackpack has been itemized for 2014 (save for the stoptech rotors), it would be tempting to go with the base pzeros for durability and slightly lower cost. Plus a street tire with slightly lower limits is sometimes a good thing for enjoying the car on back roads. Impressions?

Also, did you get the 458 pass on video?...

Hm. I'd drive the Ferrari and keep the wine and cheese in the garage behind velvet ropes. That stuff is expensive.

Great track report, Venom V. Glad you had fun and glad your snake is all you expected it to be after such a LONG wait.

Thanks George, I wish our schedules had lined up. It would've been fun to track together. What an experience.

It was about 95 I think, damned hot but not like the previous trip there in the Camaro, 108! In any event, I'm done with these Corsas once they're worn out, which won't be long from the looks of them. Moving on to stickier rubber, which ought to also improve the times a bit :D

LOL, sadly yes. When my car was running late on delivery, there was a side of me that wanted to jump ship just because of that color. Adrenaline Red would've been the smarter choice, and it looks amazing in person. I even made an offer on a black one (because it's more practical, am I nuts?). But I'm glad I ended up with the Stryker Red. I'm sure you can relate. I was drooling at the sight of a Venom Red snake on our CA Viper Gathering.

The Corsas seem really sticky to me in a straight line. I haven't really done any WOT from a dead stop, only from a roll. But they grip hard. The P Zeros seem pretty grippy too, but most of my time driving them so far has been break-in miles, so I don't have much data. The deal killer for the Corsas is that they are about $3K per set, and I almost killed them in one track day. Yikes. From what I've read, they get heat cycled and lose grip after maybe 12 - 15 heat cycles. Based on my experience, the Corsas would only last a single weekend at the track. So I completely agree, I'd suggest the street P Zeros if you only have one set of tires/wheels. The ZR1s that I drove at Spring Mountain had Michelin Pilot PS2s, and they were great on the track. The Pilot Super Sports would be even better. Really wish that Michelin made tires in our sizes. For the track, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are nearly the correct size, with the rears a little narrower than 355 at 345/30-19. That's likely what I'll replace the Corsas with on my track wheels. Unless I can figure out how to get Hoosiers to and from the track.

I didn't pass the 458, I caught him and stayed on him for a while until he pitted. I don't think he was used to getting caught and didn't know how to point me by :D
In any event, I think I have it on my GoPro but I'm getting error messages when I try to download my bigger vids to my Mac. New to the GoPro, can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong. I'll keep trying.

The track photographer however snapped this pic right after I passed the 430. I liked this one enough that it's going on my wall...

Excellent driving Venom V. Thx for the video. 1.50 g's on the factory alignment and Corsas is ridiculous. Hope the G meter is more accurate than the 0-60 meter a la the other thread. Catching and keeping up with that Ferrari Challenge car says a lot about the G5 Viper abilities. Did you get a chance to chew the fat with the Ferrari Challenge driver after? :D
