Hi Guys,

I gotta ask...I am literally on the verge of buying a Gen 4 Viper SSG. I have loved and followed the Viper since 1992...and worked hard to finally get here. I have done everything on my own, and am proud of it-even having a couple collector cars as well...BUT odd thing is, I have this impression that this car may be too showy, even ostentatious. I have never been a guy who EVER cared what anyone thought, but my wife has expressed her agreeement in this.

Would love some light on your thoughts/experience.

Thanks,
franchise

I've had people at work call mine the Batmobile. I don't care for that term; but then again if you are going to drive a car as rare as ours people will think what they want to. If you like the SSG I say buy it. I think they look sharp.

If you don't want attention, a Viper isn't for you...people don't see them very often, so you'll find that you have people following/pacing/waving at you fairly regularly. I've had people pace me on the interstates for miles on end...just comes with the territory. I don't care for all of the attention, but I deal with it because driving the car is worth it.

I love my SSG. I get many compliments on it. The Viper is a "showy" car. Add in some SSG and its a knock out!

You wouldn't have loved the Viper if it wasn't so outrageous in performance and in looks.

It's part of the DNA of the car... the only way to tell if you can live with the celebrity like spectacle is to own one. :D

Don't worry about it, buy it if you want it. You will get attention in it, it will take getting used to. I am not a "showy" person either. SSG ACR is even worse.

Well, well, I learnt a new word today. So she thinks it may be ostentatious?
Well, yeah?
Ain't that the point?
Well maybe, but without really trying.
I have had viperidous since 1995. All red except a silver SRT-10 truck.
None have gotten attention like the SSG I now own. But then I was a middle of three boys, so I like to finnally get the attention I deserve - LOL
But seriously, you both obviously like to check out Vipers, Lambos, Ferrari, etc? Right.
If you are worried about what others think, a Viper is not for you.
But if you do get it, and if someone follows you to ask about it, just be nice. You will met some really nice people. The people that glare at you are jealous, and not worth knowing or worrying about.

Great question. I've owned 3 different Vipers since 2004 and have internally battled this a few times. I own the car for the pure enjoyment of it and as a personal reward for the hard work/sacrifice it took to get here. I have let all my close friends/brothers, brothers-in-laws and true car guys drive my cars. Keep the attention on the CAR and not on YOU, IMHO. I had this talk with my brother before and asked him if it was too 'showy', etc. and he said no, based on the way YOU have handled owning it. He told me if I had acted like a big shot or treated it like an idol or if it changed ME it would have been a problem. Sharing the ownership with others allows them to experience something they wouldn't have. I LOVE coming out of a restaurant and seeing a dad and son gawking - I always ask "have you ever SAT in one?" they always say no. I have the youngest sit in the driver's seat first, then older and kids and of course dad. The dads (and moms) have always been SUPER cool and really tell their kids to be careful. Just remain humble, share the experience (when you can...) and if the car begins changing who you are, you can always sell it to the next owner. Enjoy that SSG, my 10 year old son's favorite color combo. Congrats on your purchase. Drive safely...

Sold my SSG to get a Gen V. Love the Gen V, but miss my SSG badly. Looking for another SSG so if you don't buy it, send me the details. :)

Don't worry about the attention. ALL Vipers draw attention and the SSG is simply one of those cars you could stare at all day. You won't be disappointed.

I have a suggestion.

Dress like a ninja. Nobody can see a ninja. The car will get all of the attention, but the ninja suit will balance it back down to normal. Problem solved.

Good comments on this thread. I have had so many people "share" the experience by asking me questions about it. People love the car. A guy last night while I was filling up asked me if the car was brand new. He said it shone like it had just come off the lot. He asked if I keep it that clean all the time. Heck yes. Then he asked if I added the hood (no, it's the stock hood). He loved it. When people say to me "awesome car", I respond in a humble tone saying "yes it is", as opposed to saying "thank you". I had nothing to do with it being awesome, I just have the privilege to drive it.

Here is picture of mine with my good friends. Yes, we create a spectacle when we drive together.

Be prepared to see hilarious looks and questions everywhere you go.

I have people yell at me at stoplights, from sidewalks as I drive by, etc.

You literally can't get gas without people staring and asking questions. I'm sure being only 26 and looking 21 doesn't help my case.

One day a lady asked me "what type of job do you have to have to own a car like that? I told her I'm a surgeon specializing in hand reconstruction (I'm an engineer lol). Moral of the story, just enjoy it and expect others to be curious.

Comments I have received on my SSG Roadster have been 99.5% positive. The car brings many smiles and looks. If you have any bad habits (nail biting or nose picking) this is not the car for you. Be prepared to be photographed/filmed at all times when in the car.
SSG on a Viper is a iconic combination!

Yes, you will get looks for everyone, because they are so rare. I bought mine three months ago in Augusta, Ga. I got in and started heading home to Colorado on I-20 and I had people pulling along side taking photos. I was in the right lane doing just below the speed limit getting comfortable with it and had someone in a Porsche pull next to me and start asking questions and taking photos. As others have said, it's part of the fun. That's why I wanted it over a Vette. There are vettes and Porsches and even ferraris all over the place, but not Vipers. Get it and enjoy!

I wanted the 08 SSG Viper down in Houston, I settled for a 08 dark red one pretty close to me. The green seemed a little over the top to me, but DAMN I love the color. Part of me still thinks I should have bought the SSG vert.

The SSG is fun. Even out in a city full of exotics, I get thumbs up every time I take it out, more so than any of my other vipers. Even when I look at it, I think, "My God, what a sick looking car" Don't buy it for what others think, buy it for yourself. If SSG is what you like, jump on it. If you are more into dolphins painted on the hood, well, do taht and just don't post any pics. Make yourself happy, that is what the viper is about.

More so..... if you let total strangers influence your personal decisions (in this case, buying a car that you really want), then buy something else.

As everyone has mentioned already it really is all about the car. Mine is a triple black 04 with the 6-spoke wheels and every time I take it out there are many complements on the car. Like most others here I worked very hard for many years to get the car and feel very fortunate to own it and therefore just consider myself the caretaker of an amazing car. One of the most memorable compliments was driving with the top down on a dual lane highway toward O.C. beach when I hear someone approaching in the right lane screaming “Viper, Viper, I love your car!!!” The windows were tinted so the rear driver’s side window goes all the way down and this beautiful girl, still screaming lifts her top and flashes me. What could I do….things looked really good from where I was sitting so I smiled and gave her thumbs up.
