Using a floor jack

Newbie question. I'd like to get under my 1999 GTS, but I only have one jack...has anyone had issues lifting the car one corner at a time? Some cars require you open the doors and pop the hood prior to lifting as well, do you guys
recommend this?

Depending on where you place the jack you'll probably lift one side at a time because of how stiff the frame is. Take your time the first few times. Ramps and two jacks make it a 5 minute job to get it up on four jack stands. I never open the doors or pop the hood when jacking.

Jack it up in front the rear wheel first, and place the front jackstand. Then jack from the rear frame corner point and place the rear jackstand. Same for the other side.

Or you can do the front stands both first if you like the locked rear wheels on the ground last.

I have done is several ways and just don't get in a hurry and you will be OK. The frame on the car is so rigid that doors or hood being open really mean nothing.

Newb here also. The other day I jacked mine up for the first time, first lifting driver side front /place stand, rear/ place stand, go to the other side, repeat. As said, take your time.

If you lift the car from the rear you can easily set both jack stands with one lift.

Harbor Freight... Get two.

$100 buys a 'good enough' steel low-clearance jack. I have three and they all work fine and never 'let me down'.....lol


Just follow safety procedures.... Once it's up set your stands!! (I don't trust Harbor Freight crap either).

I doubt it matters if you lift your car with doors/hood open. thinking back I guess I have left the hood open while jacking in the past.

dont be surprised when your jacking one corner and the car is suddenly balanced on two wheels, the frame is super stiff. as others mentioned.. go slow.

I have two jacks. With vipers, it makes the experience a lot less stressful and frightening.

As others have said, I have two of the harbor freight low profile jacks. Get the heavy one, not the more expensive aluminum lightweight version. I have both and although the aluminum one is nice for moving around, the heavy, cheaper low profile one works better and provides more clearance for lowered cars.

I always roll the windows down first. Get the lowest profile aluminum jack that is light weight. Some are lower than others when fully down too. Make sure to first look under car well to find the factory jack points. If removing a wheel or getting underneath the car, always use a jack stand too.
