Hey all. I tried searching in the timeslip section but couldn't really find a good example. What mods does it take for a Gen III to run 10s in the quarter mile naturally aspirated?

Will the following do the trick?

Intake
Cat-back exhaust
High flow cat
Headers
Tune
3.55 gears
19" Nitto drag radials
Good track/driving

Let me know if that would dip into the 10s? Thanks

I don't think that is enough.

Cam, pulleys ported intake/heads bigger TB?

I'm not too up to date on the Gen III mods, but I would think a cam may be needed.

I thought I saw a post once with a time slip of 10.96 from some dude back east. 2006 coupe with usual bolt-on's.

Planets must have been aligned for that one. -perfect launch, ideal track temp, ambient temp, experienced driver having a lucky day, tires that worked, maybe there was a tail wind that day.......maybe there was a hot girl at the track watching him.

If power is the issue, the Roe 710 cam/heads package would fix that.
Or possibly the Mopar 650 hp head upgrade.

Gen III is killer because there are so many options for us. Cams, heads, superchargers, twin-turbos, hand held PCM tunes, dyno tuning capability, NOS, multiple exhaust choices...........pretty much whatever the pocketbook can afford.

Had all those mods and the best I could get in my 05 was a 11.5. Ran 10.9's in my Paxton car on street tires with 630whp

I am considering the head /cam thing.

Just to even it up on the straights with the 911 turbos, 458 Italias, ZR1s, and crazy modded Z06s.

Bone stock zo6's have run 10.9's, but im with you. I just picked up another GENIII car and I will be looking to mod it and hopefully get it into the 10's.

Thanks all, some good info in this thread! I just learned about the heads/cam route and never really gave it much thought because I figured it would yield a low cost per hp return, maybe 50hp for $5k, but I have been absolutely shocked that a gg head/cam can add 200 hp. Gen III's are putting down 620-640 rwhp with just heads, cam, ported intake and exhaust/headers. It seems like people have been extremely covert about posting cost for heads/cam and labor prices. I honestly have no idea what it cost. If I could get it all done, installed and tuned for the price of a Paxton or less I would be content. :) 620 rwhp n/a with a conservative tune, pump gas and stock reliability is my goal. That would be a fun street car IMO, fast but not to crazy.

If you go as far as head cams etc and race don't forget the Gen IV oil system upgrades.

I ran my heads/cam Gen III over the summer. It was a hot/humid Texas day (+95degF, +90% humidity, +2500DA), but still went by to accompany some friends. I will be going back in cooler weather and see how much more I can improve my et and trap. I am guessing I can pull 10.6s if I can get a 1.6 60ft and not eff up the 3/4 shift.

Best et: 10.91 at 128mph (1.71 60ft, missed 3/4 shift)
Best mph was 133.x (ran 3 times)
Best 60 ft was 1.71 sec (ran 3 times)

A friend recorded the run with the iphone. You can't see the et/trap, but still thought I would share.

Man I love that car!

MPH seems a little low though? My Gen4 makes right at 600rw and traps the same.

It might be possible to get with that setup, but you will need a better suspension front and back to get the car to get into the asphalt. It will run you about 4k. I run 11:55 with no headers, head work, stock cam, the only thing I have is a ported intake and an old Dan Cragin tune 91 octane. good wires, Racemaster drag radials at 17psi MGW shifter (this is a must) a tack that reads outputs digital rpm and a fair amount of seat time. So if you do heads, cam, ported intake then mid tens can be common BBG had built one like that it with his formula it was a rocket.

The gearing is killing me on the 1/4. The stock 3.07 with a 28" tall tire is way to tall. I had to slip the clutch over 100ft to get a decent 60ft (clutch smoking, etc.). The 3/4 shift at 127ish is right before the traps. Rpm in 4th is at about 4900 when I finish at 133mph. I know I could do much better if I run a setup like yours with 3.55 and shorter tires. That would put me at about 6000 rpm at the traps (where I have about 70 more whp than at 5000rpm), not to mention the overall gearing advantage.

I think that my dyno at 640whp is about right. At our last half mile event, my 165.x mph pass was higher than blown c6 z06 that dynoed over 700whp. My 195mph pass at the Texas Mile would also indicate that I have some healthy power.......and properly geared for those events :)

Awesome stats for sure. My car doesnt seem to love the 26" tall tires so far but I'm going to have 1 more go with them before I put the 28's back on
