S2000 push button start

We had a long weekend up here in the North, so I finally got around to installing my S2000 start button

I followed the instructions posted here in the past, with a few minor changes. I do have the updated interior with the mirror toggle switch. Since I put the start button in that location, I relocated the toggle switch father down, which actually looks quite good. Looks stock, imo.
Here are the parts that I used:

One S2000 start button. I looked around quite a bit for various options, but in the end, the S2000 button was the only one that looked good and well built. Most other buttons were cheaper ebay ones that just looked cheap.

One internal hard drive connector to hook up to the rear of the start button.

For the relay, I went for a combination of relay and connector, for two reasons. One, it was much easier to pre-wire before the install. Two, should the relay ever fail, I can just unplug it and replace it with another one in literally a few seconds.

I wired the relay into the driver side fuse box, so that it will be easily accessible, without having to take the dash apart to get to it.

Havn't had time for better pics, but you get the idea. Really happy with the result

Viper can now only be started with the start button, not with the key, similar to the Gen3 setup. I found the best wire for the ign ON voltage is the black/orange one under the steering wheel. That way you can deal with all wires (red, yellow and bk/org) in one location.

Looks great. You still need to turn the key to unlock the steering column lock though, correct? Does it have ACC position?

Good job Alex. I'd like to do same for my car but ICBC has the inside pictures kept for their records on my collector status. I guess I could put black tape over it if they need me to submit pictures in the future. They sent me a letter stating that I have to maintain the vehicle in great shape,lol. Never been told that before with previous collector vehicles. They must be getting picky now a days!

You still have to turn the key to switch on the start button (otherwise you could crank the engine without a key), but it wont start with the key. All other key positions are still intact, like ACC.

Has a nice OEM look to it.

The mirror toggle switch location is perfect for the start button. Looks factory.

Well, I based it on instructions by other Viper owners, so I really don't want to take credit for what others did. I just modified some steps to suit my specific needs. I can pm you some links if you'd like.

I would love to do this, but you're going to have to be more specific about how the wiring was done. Exactly what wire(color) did you connect to what wire and where?

Ok, here's the wiring diagram. If you use the hard drive connector on the start button, it will have different colours, but the wires will splice/connect into the same locations. I also found other connectors that will hook up to the back of the button (like a fan connector), so it doesn't really matter which one you use. I also soldered all splice locations, to make sure they have good contact. I guess you can also use a 4 pin relay, I just found the 5 pin to be more common, in case I need to replace it. If you are mounting the start button in the location of the mirror toggle switch (where I put it), you will also have to trim the plastic panel behind it to have enough space to push it all the way in, as well as push aside the wire bundle in that location. It's a tight fit, but there's just enough room.

Since you are piggybacking the relay I assume the car will still start when turning the key all the way? Thanks for posting the diagram.

No, I disconnected the key from the starter (yellow wire), so that I can only start with the start button. Kind of defeats the entire concept of a start button, if you can simply start the car with the key. Key is only required to turn on ignition, supply power to the start button and unlock steering column.

The Gen3 start button does not have a surround ring, as it fits directly into the molded dash. You might get it to work, if it fits exactly into the mirror toggle switch location, but I'm not sure. But the S2000 button will cover the hole in the dash, so that it looks fully integrated.

One of the thing that I never understood. Now instead of 1 step start, you need 2 steps.
It would make sense to have a push button start if you had a proximity key/fob that you can keep in your pocket.

Yes, but the Gen3 start button works in the same way, from the factory. Still have to put in key, turn it, then press the start button. Same with the S2000. It's not until recently that manufacturers switched to proximity keys. I realize it's more of a gimmick than anything else, but isn't the entire Viper all about show. You can also get from point A to point B in a Honda Accord travelling at double the posted speed limit.
Also, the start button is right next to the key, so you don't even have to move your hand away from that location, you just move your finger a little to the right and you're there

^ I concur. It also gives a bit of a "race car" touch to the vehicle. Probably wouldn't be as cool on a minivan or pickup.

I put my S2000 start button in the cigarette lighter position, I did not want to drill out the main dash, its also more fun for the kids to press when I'm giving charity rides.

One thing though, DO NOT PRESS THE ENGINE START BUTTON WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, you will engage the starter motor! (it is not an engine start/ engine stop button)

I diverted the cigarette lighter into the roof of the Glove box and also put in an additional accessory socket (you have to remove seats and rear bulkhead to get to the roof of the glove box)

Most other starter buttons are wired in a similar way. Sometimes, if you buy a kit, it comes with a custom relay specifically for that application. My worry with that was, if that relay should fail, you can't just go to the next autoparts store to replace it. You'd have to order that specific component from the manufacturer, which means your car could be out of commission for a while. I guess you could just replace the custom relay with a Bosch version before the install, as long as you can figure out the wiring, which should be pretty simple.
