I just read that SRT is considering whether to use this newly designed V8 supercharged engine called the "Hellcat" in the Viper. Any one have more info? Near 700 Hp or more.

Hi Fred. It is a false rumor. The Hellcat engine would not fit in the Gen V Viper.

Correct. It will be one of two engines offered by SRT and this is already public knowledge. The 6.4 liter or the 6.2 liter Hellcat will be avalable. Source, among others, is Allpar. The 2014 SRT 8 Challenger weighs 4170 pounds. I would guess that the 6.2 liter Hellcat engine 2015 Challenger may weigh even more. The SRT Viper weighs less than 3400 pounds. The Hellcat will have to have one Hell of amount of HP to equal or come close to the 10.9 second quarter that Nineball already did in a stock Gen V. But, since it is clearly intended as a Camaro ZL1 and Mustang GT 500 dominator on the drag strip, I expect it to have a Hell of alot of HP. I would also expect the base price to reflect that and be north of 55K. The 2014 Camaro ZL1 starts at $55,355.00 and the 2014 Mustang GT500 starts at $55,545. Since SRT has had better content and interiors in its cars, I would expect a somewhat higher base price. The current 6.4 liter 2014 SRT 8 model base price is $38,995.00 so my guess for the starting price of the Hellcat would be $57,950 to reflect the additional content but not be too far away from the Mustang or the Camaro.

In the alternative, if the Hellcat is not just a straight line car but is also meant to best the new Z28 Camaro, its price would be considerably higher due to the addition of some fairly expensive additional equipment but maybe that equipment will be optional.

Copied from another site:

We've already heard the Challenger Hellcat will be “absolutely sinister" with "stupid power," but it appears it could outgun the SRT Viper.

Speaking to Hot Rod Magazine, SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said "We have a situation where ... the flagship car is not the most powerful car in our arsenal." He declined to go into specifics but noted "We have an internal horsepower race as well as an external one."

While Gilles didn't mention any numbers, the SRT Viper has an 8.4-liter V10 engine that develops 640 bhp (477 kW) and 600 lb-ft (814 Nm) of torque. This suggests the Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 will produce more than 640 bhp (477 kW) and some reports have even suggested the output could be as high as 700 bhp (477 to 522 kW).

Unless the Challenger gets completely re-done, it will not best a Viper. It is massive, just massive and it has a very high center of gravity. Hopes of it competing with a Z28 are not good either due to this. Either way, this is a pulverized dead horse. The Viper is going to stay a V10 and maybe this is the excuse SRT needed to add more power to the Viper.

If there trying to make the Challenger run with the Camaro or Mustang it will need at least 700 bhp, lets hope they do not drop the ball.

I don't think it will best the Viper in anything but HP. Its an internal "HP" war. It may make more power than the Viper but it surely won't be engineered to be faster than the Viper around a track. If it comes with a DCT and has more power and it is not big SUV weight, it could give the Viper problems in the straights only imho. The aftermarket will love this car especially if it is easily moddable.

As per the Cobra Mustang and Z06 Vette the engines in these cars have passed EMISSIONS DRIVABILITYand DURABILITY TESTS in the 800 hp range Should Chevy or Ford decide they want a Vette or Stang in that power range the work is done .According since its now supercharged i would venture to say the HELLCAT engine is WAY OVERBUILT FOR ONLY 650 HP and if SRT deams it applicable Viper ready

PS iam not saying it wll happen but when a MULTI PLATFORM MOTOR comes into play its a totally different ballgame from a budget feasibility standpoint than a single platform low volume motor .You take a 750 hp blown motor and stick it in a Gen 5 priced in the 75k range and look out .

As i posted previously if SRT chose to use the motor in the Viper at 800 hp that would not be to difficult to do .

The problem is its impossible to power to the existing Viper engine without spending a ton of money.Anything done must pass driveability ,durability and emissions testing and of course stay in budget

As stated now publicly, the Hellcat motor does not fit in the Gen V Viper. But more importantly, the Challenger weighs and the 2015 Hellcat Challenger will still weigh, more than 800 pounds more than the Viper. This is a certainty. Why? Among other reasons, just think about the driveline changes and upgraded, larger brakes needed to balance out a Hellcat Challenger.

For people who know little or nothing about cars, HP bragging rights mean something. But anyone with common sense knows that weight is just as important and, for handling purposes, perhaps more important. So if the Hellcat comes out with say 680 or 700 HP, so what? Do you really think that 40 to 60 HP and some additional mid range torque is going to make up for a more than 800 pound difference? No way.

Furthermore, the Hellcat doesnot need to do a 10.9 second quarter ( what Nineball did in his stock 2013 Viper) to beat the stock Mustang GT 500 or the stock Camaro ZL1.

I will be very surprised if the stock Hellcat quarter mile time is below 11.4 or so and that will be flying in a rear wheel drive car that heavy.

I agree completely...I have a 14 GT500 with 740 at the wheels and the only way I could MAYBE keep up with a 13/14 Viper would be from a roll. The most rubber I can put on the car is a 315. Even with DR's I think I'd be behind a 13/14 Viper the whole way. Just my opinion though. JD

In 2009 Muscle Mustang and Fast Ford ran my STOCK Gen 4 against a Shelby Supersnake making 750 to the tire and the Supersnake ate my car alive. My Gen 4 ran 11.3 at near 130 to the Supersnakes 10.9 at 135 plus .Same driver ,same day same track on stock rubber

I have a 14 GT 500, here is what I have found. If you have two meat heads driving, from a dead stop on the street the Gen5 will win, same two meat heads from a roll the GT 500 walks the Gen5 At these HP levels the driver is key. And if the road has some bends the GT 500 is done. But they are fun to drive, crazy powerful.:D But I love my Viper the best.

My wife has a 13 Challenger great car she loves it, but even with a Hellcat 700 motor, at 4200 lbs there is no danger of that car beating anything

Steve exactly as a pro driver in a Gen 2 can take out an average driver in a GEN 5 at the strip (down close to 200 hp) These no way in the world (OTHER THAN THE DRIVER ) that a 750 RWHP (if it truely makes that )should lose to a Gen 5 at the strip. When the mags did the comparasion every run there was at least 4 tenths and 4 mph difference on stock tires. The MUSTANG was all over the place and and average -good driver would have had issues

It was a mind altering decision to plunk down $45K for the 392 Challenger, but no regrets after 33K miles in under two years. But with the entry price for the 'Dodge' Hellcat pushing $60K, I will have to move to Colorado or Washington to do my shopping :2tu:

The driver is so important, thats why sometimes you have to take the times that the mags quote with a grain of salt. On the street the Gen5s with there big rear tires are tough to beat, My Gen 2 with 335 30 18s is great on the street, but a Gen5 is more fool prof.:D

With the mags some drivers are AVERAGE at best while others are world class .I probably have been to 60 plus MCmullen Argus test sessions at Englishtown (dating back to 1995 )testing everythng from 200 hp V-6 Mustangs to 1000 plus hp Vipers ,Vetts FGT and Stangs Numerious test drivers get a shot during a test session but you can tell the pros real quick Last year Ford sponcered a MAG test driver shootout .Every mag sent their best and in a 700 HP Cobra there was over 6 tenths difference between the timeas my buddy who used to test and race my Vipeonn the trophy

I think you're right...I'm not an experienced driver and I tend to think horse power is overrated. Where is Bradaton? I would welcome the opportunity to see what my GT500 could do with someone who knew what they were doing. JD

I have both, the Gen2 is far easier to launch than the G5.

The launch control on the Gen 5 should help I would think, my Gen2 is not bad , but still can spin the tires like your on ice, I thought the Gen5 would be better then the Gen2.

Yea that'll be a great new hemi but if it doesn't have aftermarket tuning, it'll be limited.

As for the GT500, my '14 sounds identical, I have Raven Racings 13-6 kit and track exhaust. 10s on MPSS tires, 305 rears. DR or slicks would make it easy for 10s all day. From a roll it rips your face off. I love my gen4 with its catback, etc., but from a roll it wouldn't stand a chance and from a dig, not much better, lol.

Great interview with Ralph on that other thread. Check it out if you haven't already, he gives good info.
