2003/2004 Safety Recall Notice

Hey Guys/Ladies, I just received a safety recall notice from Chrysler for the repair of the airbag system Occupant Restraint Control(ORC)module. The dealer will install ORC module filter circuit to correct the problem. This recall is for 2003/2004 SRT-10 Vipers. The repair is suppose to take 2 hours. The Part is finally available.

That's good news. Thanks for posting. An airbag exploding in your face for no reason would be a bit un-nerving at best!

It's been a year since I got the initial letter. May car goes in in a month for annual PA inspection and service, I'll have to call them to make sure they have the part in when I take the car in.

This is a rather involved install, quite a bit of dashboard removal. Pick your dealer wisely. Very wisely.

Is there any chance of getting the part and doing it yourself? I actually plan to take out my gauge cluster again to address a flakey light socket and wouldn't mind just doing the airbar stuff while I'm in there. I know it's free, but I'd still rather just do it myself if I can while I'm there.

Of course you can do it yourself - that's if you purchase the part and assume all liability.

I would not do this yourself. One might need to travel to find a certified trusted tech... What a bummer, just got my notice myself...

I can't believe I am asking this, but it is a warranty item and I want the cars history to show everything done complete and correct. I do all my own work and I work on many other members cars as well (April 5'th this Saturday is Oil Change Day at my shop).

Who would you recommend as a responsible dealer to do this recall. I am in Delaware and am willing to drive a little. Im sure there are directions with the recall part and any competent tech can do this job, it just sounds invasive and I want to be sure they will do a careful job.

I don't really mind assuming the liability as I intend to have my car for many many years and miles to come. Would be nice if they provided the part free of charge though since it would be free to get the whole thing done by a dealer anyway. I just hate to keep yanking the dash out of the car if I'm already going to have it apart to do something else. Soft parts never seem to quite go back together the way they came apart, even less so after numerous removals/installations.

I understand you intend to keep the car for years to come but remember at resale time, the work will never show as finished if you do it yourself.

Guys,

All I will say, is read between the lines. I am by NO MEANS telling anyone what they should or should not do, but simply posting relevant facts. This is a safety issue, and ultimately what you decide is your decision:

1. There have been ZERO Viper related problems. This originated from Jeep issues and the Viper was pulled into it.

2. The Airbag Control Module in 2003-2004 is the identical part to 2005-2006. The latter is not included in this recall.

3. No superseding part exists beyond 04865582AB, and that is what is installed in my 2004 already, and the same exact component used in 2005-2006.

4. If you have a 04865582AB, you have the same component that is technically in the unaffected vehicles.

My point is no dealership or car manufacturer is going to hand over the part for "free" and then leave it up to you to complete the labor on a safety recall. They don't care if you don't mind assuming the liability but they definitely won't assume by having a non-authorized Dodge repair facility or an individual perform this work. The whole point of this is to correct an issue which can create a hazardous situation which can then lead to injury or death. This "step" is also for anyone who may take ownership of this car in the future (if/when you decide to sell or trade at some point).

OK - so any trusted Chrysler Dealers/Techs in the MD/DC?VA area that anyone can recommend?

Steve, I'll probably have my guy at Videon in Newtown Square do it when I have my car PA inspected next month. We'll talk when I see you on Saturday

Wonder if they will check before pulling dash apart and if it needs replacing if the same part is already installed. I have a custom double-din audio system and would rather they not mess with it unless necessary. I have contacted I.G Burton in Milford, DE where the car was purchased. They seem ok if you keep an eye on them. btw they like to take high speed "test" drives in your car so make sure you are included in any "testing". Last time it came back after front end alignment and the speaker port cover was laying in the floor. The top was down and the only way that happens is well above 100mph....not that I would have personal knowledge of this fact :)

Just called my dealer to have them order the part in. I'm having them do it when I take the car in for PA inspection next month. I'll update you all after it's done.

If I bring mine in I'll be removing all my painted trim and stereo if need be before I let them screw it up. Dan I heard it's some sort of patch harness. Is the module behind the main cluster or center cluster? I need to know what to remove or I might say screw it and leave it alone. If it fails maybe they'll put me in a Gen 5 that is if I'm still alive. LOL

My dash is stock, but it is 11 years old. I hope something doesn't crack as they're removing it. I thought about leaving it as well, but Steve is right - when it comes time for me to trade or sell the car, I want the recalls done. I looked into this when I bought the car, as some of the 03s did have a couple recalls early on in life, and they had been done on my car.

I just don't want to see her with the dash off.....

I'm not letting the dealer remove the dash,

The center console and radio bezels and radio are removed and then the plastic bezel around the actual cluster, the actual dash does not have to be removed. If you are comfortable removing these pieces before going in I would also, but if you break any tabs it's on you, if they do it is probably on them.

Thanks Mark. That still seems like a lot for what the letter claims is a 2 hour job. They were going to do it while I wait, but maybe I better arrange for a ride and just leave my car for the day!

Hi Mark,
Please clarify. Remove the console, center gauge cluster trim. What about the large plastic trim that surrounds the center and main cluster. I painted mine to match the car and if it needs to be removed I'd rather do it than the dealer. Does it need to be removed?
