The 2001 acr we got last year has had problems with reverse from day 1 and now its gotten to the point where its basically unusable. im ready to tear the trans out and get a new reverse gear and check everything else out while its apart. history of the car is filled with abuse and was a track car, only 20k mi on it as it sits. as far i knew these trans were bullet proof and i have no idea how the previous owner managed to destroy it this bad. looks like a winter project for me, ill just have to park where i can pull forward for now

My Gen 3 is hard to get into reverse. I have to get the reverse syncros spinning and right when you can hear them about ready to stop...put it into reverse. Then it is good to go. Never gotten worse...been that way since I bought it a year ago. If I don't spin up the syncros and try to put into reverse...it pops out every time. But when I put it into reverse, (knowing it really did not go far enough) then let the clutch out just enough to spin up the reverse gear syncros....wait until it is about done spinning, the put it in....it works every time. Annoying? Yes!, but I can live with it.

it will go into gear and i will have to hold it there. it will start backing up but then it will just grind as if it popped back out without moving the shifter or as if its just spinning in place.

tried that and still didnt work. it doesnt feel like its all the way in but it will back up a little bit before it grinds and the reverse light comes on. so i think it is in gear and the gear is just shot

I had the same thing with mine when I bought it. It was a bad reverse slider. They're made of plastic. I just had the whole thing rebuilt, clutch replaced. Before I had it fixed, I'd have better luck getting it into reverse if I engaged 1st before reverse since they're on the same syncro.

yeah i had a feeling it was going to be a rebuild. do they have an ungraded slider that you can put in instead so it doesnt happen again?

I think the sliders can be had in brass instead of plastic, but I'm not sure where to order them. The transmission shop mentioned that they could order them in brass, but the transmission was already torn down and I was impatient to get my car back. It sounds like the same problem I had, so if you will be rebuilding it, try to arrange to have brass sliders ordered ahead of time to save you some time.
