Have Z Need Snake

Have talked to a few folks and found the following:
On my '09 hardtop the driver's window went fully down and remains there after new battery install.
The car had sat undriven for 4 months and battery was totally dead even though it was on a battery tender. I'd been in cast on left leg for this time after Achilles repair--so not my fault!
Thoughts are:
It's probably the regulator and not the motor.
To find out, have to get door panel off.
There's the rub! Highly likely the repair shop is going to break the plastic trim piece on the top of the door panel and this piece cannot be had separately. Must purchase entire door panel for $1500 or so.
Has anyone successfully removed this panel without breaking anything?
I'm intending to do it myself.
Hints, clues, warnings form those who've been there/done that would be appreciated.
