I got my airbag module recall on my 2005 SRT-10. Waiting for better weather and the dealer getting the part. I'm trying to find out where it is located. The service manager thinks it's under the console. I read that it might be in the dash under the radio. I'm told it's a 2 hour project which includes computer programming. Does anyone know were the module is?

Behind the dash...the ones that I have seen being done on 03 & 04 Vipers required removing dash, removing steering wheel, and dropping steering column to floor for access. This is nothing to rush along as dash scratches can easily happen. One must also take great care to be sure that all of the various electrical plugs are solidly engaged and locked as it is no fun trying to trouble shoot these things later at home.

Didn't know there was a recall at all. Are 06 models affected? My 05 Ford GT has a recall and I get a post card every month for over two years.

On my 2005, it is not behind the dash. It is behind the radio. Two hours worth of work or less.
Dash does not come out at all.
I posted all the paperwork sent to me by Chrysler on my 2005. It is on the Forum. I am doing mine myself.
It is not hard a all. Already have the radio out for replacement.
The module is right behind the radio. Already ordered the part.
If you do, make sure you use the new part number.
After replacement , I will send Chrysler the receipt for reimbursement.
Yes, they say they do that. It is in writing too.

Interesting. This is the route I'd prefer to go, but wasn't aware you could get the recall parts if you weren't a dealer. I assume the 03/04 fix is the same as the 05/06, but maybe not. To my understanding it was just a filter that plugged inline with the module. I think I also remember reading if you had small enough hands you could do it without removing the dash, likely by reaching through the radio slot or something. I've had the dash out of my car numerous times, so that's no issue to me. There aren't really any dealers around me I would want to drop my car off at, so if it's going to get done it would be by me.

Hmm, interesting. Looks like it might be a slightly different fix than the earlier cars though. That looks like a full module replacement, not an inline filter like the earlier cars. Maybe they do the same thing in the long run, though I know the later cars had slightly different electronics as CAN was starting to become more common and I know at least the PCM is slightly different due to the knock sensors. I don't see why that would affect the ORC module, but you never know what sort of weird stuff could go on.

Oh, interesting. Wonder why this recall didn't call out the earlier years as well then?

The earlier recall covered the 03 cars as well (it was only 03 and 04 as I recall). This one covers the 05-06. The earlier recall was just the inline filter. It sounds like this later recall is the whole module. Looking over the NHTSA site though it appears that they updated the original recall to replace the whole module, which was my confusion. I had never seen any notice of that till I just looked it up now.

I was surprised the 05-06 weren't included in the original recall to begin with as I thought it was a common part number between all the gen 3s. Looks like maybe someone finally figured that out or maybe the numbers were different but they had the same problem.

Did you have a hard time buying the module yourself? I looked into doing this now that this appears to be the longer term fix, but at least the first supplier that I placed an order with cancelled my order and said it was a recall part, so only a dealer could order it. That sounds bogus to me, but I've had an issue like this before with a light socket of all things, so it's not entirely surprising.

For those interested in the light socket story, it boils down to if you want a socket for the reverse light bulb in a gen 3 roadster, you have to buy the whole reverse light assembly. I have the socket in my hand and a Dodge part number stamped on it, but the part lists as "export only" and doesn't show any usage for a Viper, so dealers won't sell it to me. I tell them I am holding the part in my hand and took it off a Viper, but that doesn't matter to them, only what is listed on their computer.

That is bull.
I ordered mine and later they called me to tell me that it was a recall item and that it would be free if I took car in.
I told them that I wanted the part. Was told, not problem.

I want to have a reputable dealer with a viper specialist on board to replace the module. Less chance of a screw-up i believe. I live in the Baltimore area. Any suggestions?

I think Tator's Garage is up there in New York maybe? He is one of the foremost Viper experts from what I've read and heard. Might be a bit of a trip, but he's the first that comes to mind if you are looking for a really well known name and shop.

I'll have to try that. Looks similar to the website I ordered from, but I think a lot of the online dealers have a common website design and just a different name at the top.

Hi I have 2006 coupe and I just replaced the air bag box. You are not going to like what has to be done. I had my friend and best viper mechanic come over to do it in my home. He is the mechanic magr at the dodge dealer in Bedford Hills NY north of NYC. His name is Scott Sorrentino. I will give you the main info but can get into detail if needed.
Remove the shifter trim ring pop up the trim plate 4 corners then remove cigar lighter plug and the 2 window buttons switches use 2 wrenches and remove shifter ball and shaft slip plate with e brake bag up and out of car. then remove center trim bezel one screw at 6 o clock others 5 allen screws. remove 1 plug at starter switch and 2 heater sw remove bezel remove 4 screws and remove radio 1 aerial conn and 2 elec conn remove discs first if you want. now remove the console 2 screws up front 4 in storage box and 2 on each side of console in back 2 plugs going to box remove. Now remove center trim piece around the entire speedo and tach area with speaker grille on left just snaps in place move rear view mirror around and move steering wheel now can get to gauge cluster screws remove center gauges 2 plugs about 5 screws
remove the lower panel under steering wheel 2 lower screws and pull off 1 plug for pedals now you will see the box mounted in front of the console but behind steel fixed panels the steel panels that were around the radio and center area have screws holding them will have to reach in with 1/4 socket set using no 10mm socket to loosen the 4 screws holding the box if your hands are larger than a baby kiss your skin goodbye. remove 2 identical plugs on box and try to pull metal panels in area around and get it out it is mounted there because it has to know the car and its shape to work.
if you removed all the plastic we discussed before you bring it into the dealer to do then less chance of scratches just hook the starter button up to switch off panel and drive the car

Is the removal of the Air bag module different on a 2005 vs 2006?
My removal instructions come right out of the 2005 Viper service manual.
I will be doing mine as soon as the part gets here. I will take pictures and write procedure.

Thanks

I don't see any reason it would be different between 2005 and 2006. It's probably even the same for the gen 4 cars if not the gen 5s. I think they try to keep those modules as close to the center of the car as they can so they can best measure acceleration forces, so would make sense to keep it common at least within the same generation.

@fhrzr1

OK....so I was going to order the part from the website above when I decided to check with the local dealer. And that's when everything got REALLY confusing !!!!

The dealer said the recall part number is CBSZR068AA.
This part is also available at the website mentioned above
https://www.moparsalesdirect.com/oem-parts/mopar-module-occupant-restraint-cbszr068aa
Price: $23.00 (the dealer price for this part was $41.00)

This part number is different than the one you have mentioned for the ORC module...which is the part below:
https://www.moparsalesdirect.com/oem-parts/mopar-air-bag-control-module-68290974aa
Price: $160.60

So I called FCA and asked them to confirm the part number for the recall. FCA confirmed the number from the dealer (CBSZR068AA). Additionally, FCA stated that they have NO information on the other part numbers that I provided.

Then I went to the NHTSA's website. There are 2 different recall notices there under the SAME Recall number (19V-885) but providing DIFFERENT Part numbers for the Recall.

The first one is the one that you have provided above. (Part Number: 04865582AB Part and the Remedy Part Number: 68290974AA)
Part 573 Safety Recall Report 19V-885
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCLRPT-19V885-7177.PDF

The second one is:
Safety Recall VE4 / NHTSA 19V-885Occupant Restraint Control Module
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCRIT-19V885-0322.pdf
Recall part number: CBSZR068AA.

The FCA did not know anything about the first one - even though it is an official recall on NHTSA's website.

What's going on here??????

I looking into this a bit as well as I tried to order one of those recall parts (the cheap $23 one) and was told I could not order it as I was not a dealer. I think the two different recalls have to do with how the problem was initially "fixed". When it first happened the initial fix was an inline filter harness that kept the original ORC module. Later it was determined that that fix wasn't good enough and a whole new module was released. Granted both of those part numbers look like module replacements, so that still doesn't quite add up.

Behind the dash...the ones that I have seen being done on 03 & 04 Vipers required removing dash, removing steering wheel, and dropping steering column to floor for access. Steve, My viper tech did mine 3 months ago, it took him less than 2 hours, did NOT have to remove all that stuff, FYI,

Glad to hear that. I suspect that the first few that I saw (all were 03's and 04's) were early experiences..some of which had already had the "harness fix" which was later removed and replaced by the new module.

Does that mean the cheaper part (CBSZR068AA) is the latest fix that eliminates the need for the earlier (and more expensive) OCR-module (68290974AA) fix as it was never needed in the first place?

By the way, FCA and the dealer both told me the same thing that even if I purchase the part (CBSZR068AA) on my own, I will NOT be reimbursed for that. On top of that, if I were to replace the part on my own, my car would still show as 'repair incomplete' because the recall requires a dealer to do that.

If you do manage to buy the module let me know where you did. I'd be interested in doing the fix myself one of these days just to do it, but haven't found a place that will see a "recall" part to an individual. It's cheap enough that I figured why not do it? I've had various parts of the dash and even the whole dash structure out of my car enough times to know what I'm doing.
