98 GTS Fuel Pump

My 98 GTS is slow to start when it is cold. I had it serviced at Roanoke late last year and they told me the fuel pump is weak and needs replaced, but none are available. With only 9,000 miles this was surprising. Can anyone provide info on fuel pump replacement?

How about rebuIlding yours? I would suggest that you call Dan Cragin at SPT in Alhambra, CA to discuss this possibility.

I have not attempted to remove the fuel pump at this point. I did notice someone posted their is a booster you can add as an alternative. Anyone know about that?

You can't add a "Booster" if the original doesn't pump correctly. You would end up with a starved booster pump. It's not difficult to replace the pump. You have to remove the pump module from the top of the tank and disassemble the pump from the module. There are many good aftermarket pumps available. Just make sure you get one that will fit in the original location.

Hi David,
Most likely your fuel pressure regulator check valve is bad,
but considering the age of the car you might want to rebuild the entire module. I can source the parts if needed.

I think my fuel pressure regulator check valve is bad also. I heard the only way to really get it fixed was to cut into the tank. Is that true or pretty easy to have a shop fix it?

There's no cutting into the tank. If you remove the trunk carpeting there's a screw off bulkhead fitting ring underneath.

Oh that's great news! I'll need to get mine fixed because it churns and take 5 sec to actually start up. Think that will fix it?

It normally takes a few seconds for the pump to pressurize the line. If it takes 5 seconds for the pump to even start up then you need to get it replaced.

Yep, that's what's happening. It churns for about 5-7 seconds priming the line. I tried the "work around" with the timer but didn't seem to do much. I'll get it replaced and hope it's not a big big job.
