I am sure this has been discussed in past threads. I have a 2006 viper, coupe and it sat in garage for about three weeks. I started it up earlier today and started driving and started to hear a ticking sound that sounded like a lifter tick. I went and had oil changed to make sure it had clean good oil in it. Drove it around for about 20 miles after the oil change and ticking has not gone away. Any suggestions?

Changed oil with Mobil 1 5W40. 36000 miles. not sure if i should keep driving it or let it sit until I can find a good mechanic to check it out.

Vipers are pretty notorious for valvetrain noise in general, but always hard to say on something like this. The open vents in the hood and the extra valves you get with the 10 cylinders certainly don't help. There are other things that can sound like a tick as well you might double check. Exhaust leaks can have a similar sound to that sometimes and the injectors themselves just make that sound in general as they are electromechanical devices (they are basically little solenoids, so they are constantly clicking). I know the injector sound was super prominent on my 5.7 swap in my 67 Dart, especially when the fuel rail was resting against the firewall and making it act like a speaker to amplify things.

That being said, if you don't remember it making that noise before and it is now, then it would be good to check out to be on the safe side. The trick is just how far you want to go on it though. With the stock head gaskets you can't pull the lifters out without removing the heads, so it could become quite the ordeal just to pull them out and look at them.

You might want to check the exhaust manifolds for cracks. Very common on Gen 3's and sounds like a lifter noise, worse when cold.
