I've got an '05 engine that spun a bearing at 36000 miles. I don't know the extent of damage to the block, but it's otherwise complete, and it has a fair share of salvageable components.
Here's my attempt to (hopefully) make you feel better about your debacle: I bought my 2005 in May of this year. Like you, I put too much faith in its durability and failed to purchase an extended warranty (like you, I was driving a Japanese sports car before the purchase). Within 2 weeks, I...
Over the past several days, my '05 has developed a rattling noise that clearly eminates from the transmission tunnel. What makes it odd is that it isn't consistent with RPM or any particular gear. In 1st or 2nd, is seems to come on after about 2500 RPM. In all other gears, it starts around...
Got the iPod interface cable in mine, and I can't imagine ever going back. It allows me to operate the iPod from the nav system, it displays title/artist/track, and it charges the little fellow too. Much cheaper than an elaborate new head unit. Going to get one in my wife's car next.
Many of you will remember my post several weeks ago that outlined my many tribulations that started immediately after I purchased a used '05 from a dealership in Minneapolis. Only 2 weeks after I returned to Illinois, it spun a bearing, and I was in for an engine swap. Due to my limited...
Revitalizing the post gives me a chance to provide a quick update on my findings: Upon removing the LH cylinder head, I discovered the exhaust valve seat protruding about 3/16" out of the bottom. I'm waiting for a new head gasket from Viper Specialty Performance, and then I'll reassemble...
I've got a manual on the way, but I think I'll have my new head gasket first. I did a static check on the other head and came up with ~55 FT Lb/100 Nm. I don't like the potential for error, so I could use some help. Anybody?
In retrospect, I felt that the technician that I was dealing with at the beginning (no longer with the organization) was not totally committed to my best interests, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. As obstacles continued to mount, I became more and more irritated. Upon arriving...
To set the record straight, I never asked for an engine from a junkyard. As stated previously, it was done without my consent, and I can't understand how a 1995 motor could have been accidentally ordered. I authorized purchase of an engine from eBay with 10K miles on it that was said to "run...
I'll definitely let you know when I'm back in business. The Mt. Auburn road between Decatur and Springfield is a short, but fun drive. I've also got an '08 Hayabusa that I've taken down that path a few times, and I'm anxious to do the same in the Viper.
Thanks for the sympathy. I've been putting as much free time as possible into this thing, and I'm confident I'll have it back on the road as soon as I get 2 new push rods. Luckily I have a complete, though damaged, engine waiting for me to pick up from the devil's dealership tomorrow. That...
Just removed the valve cover and the problem is quite clear. Two bent rods at cylinder 7. Next question is why? I removed the rockers, rods and valve springs, and the valves are moving smoothly, with what appears to be full travel.
I've considered an exhaust manifold leak as well, but I'm not sure how to pinpoint one short of removing the manifold and inspecting for defects. I'm pulling the valve covers now, but I'll likely remove the manifolds next if I don't see anything unusual.
I guess my dillusion came from owning 3 Japanese cars before this purchase, including a 350Z with 60,000 miles that ran like new when I traded it in. I do indeed have the service records, including every oil change performed at a dealership, and there's nothing tipping me off to an impending...
Hard to believe I lived in Omaha before moving to this Viper-forsaken place in 2007. What was I thinking? I might just need to pay a visit to Roanoke instead.
I meant to quote mjorgenson from the above post, but I forgot to hit the button.
I'll take a look under the valve covers this weekend. Incidentally, I'll be in Omaha for a couple of days next week. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to tow the Viper.
The popping is much louder and more frequent than before this debacle started. The right side might be doing it too (purring was a bit of an exaggeration), but I can't hear it over the left. I'm wondering if I have an exhaust leak, and if so, what's the best way to locate it?
