This weekend I had several problems shifting into 5 and back into 4th gear. After several times getting stuck in nuetral I decided to take apart the shifter mechanism. I found several little rocks and a piece of rubber. They just happen to be on the right side of the shifter. The plastic inside is now scratched and worn so I have still having problems shifting but not getting stuck and not as bad, which I believe was caused by the rocks and the piece of rubber. All the grease had dirt in it.
Just a heads up--I am calling Hurst about a boot. The top of the shifter is not protected.
Its pretty easy to service the shifter and change out the grease. You might be surprised by what you find in there
