Months and months ago, I proposed creating a "BPU" list for the Gen II Viper (that's Basic Performance Upgrades, btw). I believe I am now ready to create that list. Comments / questions / corrections welcome.

All figures plus/minus 5 unless otherwise noted. Power levels from cars with >10,000 miles may be 5-10 higher at each mod level due to lower internal friction. All prices quoted minus labor, as labor cost varies tremendously by area.

Stock Gen II car: 405 RWHP, 440 ft/lbs
Add filters & smooth tubes: $100-$200, 415 RWHP, 445 ft/lbs
Add catback 3" exhaust: $600 - $1500, 420 RWHP, 450 ft/lbs
Add high-flow 3" cats: $350 - $600, 425 RWHP, 455 ft/lbs
Add AL flywheel: $500, no dyno-visible gains but substantial power increase in 1st & 2nd gear.
Add headers: $1500 - $3200, 445 RWHP (435 RWHP for '00+ cars), 485 ft/lbs
Add T&D roller rockers: $1200, 460 RWHP (450 for '00+ cars, duration helps especially here), 490 ft/lbs
Add tuner heads: $3500 - $5500 (and up), 490 - 520 RWHP, 500 - 530 ft/lbs
Add ported / honed intake: $800+, 500 - 540 RWHP, 500-530 ft/lbs

This is about the limit of what I'd call "basic" upgrades. If you still want more, you can go four main routes:

1) Bored/stroked motor -- several tuners offer packages making 560 - 620 RWHP / 560 - 600 ft/lbs. $15,000 and up.
2) NOS -- this can actually be done without any of the above mods, although they work synergistically. Offered by several tuners. $1200 - $2,500, adds 100-200+ RWHP, may blow up your engine if you do something wrong

3) Supercharging -- several tuners offer packages making 550 - 1000 RWHP. $12,000 and up
4) Turbocharging -- one tuner I'm aware of offers a twin-turbo package making 750+ RWHP. $55,000

I don't have one... yet

. However, I have heard from several sources that the gains I quote are typical for cars which already have headwork and other flow modifications.

Or you could do a 300 shot of Nitrous for $800 that will put you at about 750rwhp, but the costs come from having to upgrade other components like drivetrain, engine, fuel, etc, etc.

Could someone knowledgeable update this thread with new info?
It would be nice to see new figures compared to ones 7yrs ago.
Also, would you agree with the upgrade order still, is there a better way to more power now?

how does 900rwhp sound with undergroundracing's Paxton SC system Welcome to Underground Racing for around $14,900 installed and tuned? Dont know how they do that but apparently the engine is stock, and they upgrade the fuel system and catback with this kit and yet they are pushing that kind of power. Currently there site is under major upgrade construction but lets just say they have TONS of cars in there shop getting kits installed. Soon theres going to be alot of fast SC Vipers out there, not saying there already arent, but you know what I mean. Also there World record numbers prove how good they are. There is a thread on there kit here. Do You Want To Make 900 RWHP On Pump Gas For 14.9K Installed/Tuned? - Viper Alley

I have not gotten any work done for them but there are sure alot of pleased customers out there with there kits installed, and I will most likely be a future customer.

treynor, You still out there?

Hate to ask a dumb question, but I've got a coupon for one, so here goes.

Those mods are sequential? Meaning, you couldn't expect additional 55 RWHP from roller rockers alone, right?

(Didn't think so)

So the mods, and their respective gains, are to be taken as if they were done sequentially in the order shown..

all the N/A stuff should be about the same $, and def the same power increase. its not like anything realy changed in 7 years.

as for the super and turbo setups, i could go to the tuner websites and copy there packages and prices into here, but whats the point? everyone that is interested in forced induction has already been to the hennessey/heffner/roeracing/underground ect... websites as well as reading the numerous threads on here.

I believe the SCT tune should definitely be in there for a gen II. The great thing about it is you can insert almost anywhere in the list and see incremental improvements along the way.

Please no more Vipair. I think that post is the reason for my loss of vision from staring at this screen too long.
