The last time I put on my MGW shifter (couple years ago), I don't remember drilling out anything to get the boot off. Doesn't it somehow have aluminum that bends around the base and you use a screwdriver to pry it open? I don't want to break anything so that's why I'm asking.

The leather boot is attached to the console and comes off when you raise it up and over the shifter and E brake. There are two screws at the front and two at the rear. You have to remove the (at a loss for words) bezel first. It snaps into place with tabs and has velcro at the edge closest to the rear. AC/Heat control knobs have to be removed to get it off. (then remove the larger part of the console) There are two electrical plugs connecting to the window switches, and a positive and ground for the cigarette lighter.

The rubber boot has to be drilled out then bolts put tack in to secure it in place. If you can download directions for installing a B&M short shifter, they have the instructions.
