If you have the time, take a 1 hour drive north of Detroit and see the recrerated German Village of Frankenmuth. WELL worth the time and has some of the best shopping around, not to mention the world LARGEST Christmas store! Be sure to also eat at Zenders Restaurant. Family run for like 80 years and all you can eat Chicken, veggies, stuffing (dressing), ham - kinda like thanksgiving all freshly made and did I mention all you can eat??

Car related, also good to see is the Walter P Chrysler mueseum and maybe the Connor Ave Assy Plant although you may want to call ahead to make sure they are open for tours.

Don't go out at night, in fact don't go out on the streets at all, lock your car and hope the radio survives....buy an insurance policy on your life and make me your benficiary, do any visting on the outside of the city.....the casinos have armed guards in the secured parking lots to get you to and from your car....go up to the Auburn Hills headquarters, call the VOA and see if they have any Viper plant tours scheduled OH WAIT< the UAW gets the month of December off , I think !!?? They get paid to shop for Christmas....you will quickly get tired of putting your money through special trap doors and ordering through 1 inch bullet proof glass at all the fast food stores....look around at all the burnt out buildings and wrecks just sitting, most any used car is available sitting on the sides of the roads !! Can you guess that I work for the mayor's office for tourism ??

Detroit looks its best around Christmas time. You will want to stay out of the city proper, but still lots to do and see.

Consider Dearborn Village. It has an early days theme, and Ford Motors history. You can go to cider mills, and munch a fresh donut, washed down with cider that you watch getting made.

Skiing is available at Mt. Brighton (small, but really convenient). Do some cross country skiing at several of the golf courses.

Agree with Frankenmuth. Gotta have one of their famous chicken dinners, and stroll through the year round Christmas shops.

Dress warm for December. Days are often pretty sunny and bright, with clear air, and fresh snow.

You will not be too far from the Walter P. Chrysler museum. You can see the first Vipers as well as some pretty cool prototypes.

Enjoy your trip.

You might find this helpful and it lists the hours too.

Walter P. Chrysler Museum

You might want to call JRT at 1-800-998-1110 and ask if they have any suggestions for you.
Never hurts to ask.

I'd say Frankenmuth is a good bet this time of year. There are a few nice cider mills for a quick cider and donut snack in the suburbs. What kinds of things are you interested in?

In addition to the good suggesstions aready posted, you can tour the Ford Rouge Assembly plant, The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Science Center are good entertainment. Also check out the holiday light show out by Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor.
Enjoy!

I worked downtown Detroit for a number of years before moving to Florida. During that time I only got robbed at gun point once and had the top of my vette stollen. The only part of Detroit I would go to is right Downtown. Greektown is a nice area. Taking the People Mover from Greektown around downtown is nice. Greenfield Village in Dearborn is nice around Christmas time. I do miss going to the Detroit Auto Show. The company I worked for did a lot of work for the Auto Industry in the Viper Plant which I was able to take a tour of.

Frankenmuth isn't worth the effort if you're only in town overnight. Save the drive time and see some things closer to Metro Detroit or across the river in Windsor, Ontario.

Unless a giant store stocked with every Christmas decoration you can think of excites you, if it does Bronner's is just outside of Frankenmuth a few miles.

The National Museum of the USAF is south of Detroit a few hours if you have the time-admission is free btw.
