That kinda stuff doesn't bother me because I don't care what others think about me or say about me (that's a positive point about getting older). If the price was decent I'd buy there and smirk to myself the whole while knowing me having a cool car is bugging some *****. I work for County Government in purchasing. One of the County Commissioners walked up to me one day after I had been driving my car to work for a couple of weeks and said "Some of the voters have been asking me how someone working in county government can afford an expensive sports car like yours" with a doofus look on his face. All I said was "you better get here early tomorrow cos if I get here first I am taking your parking spot". with a big grin.

I bought my '99 ACR when I was 19 (21 now), so you can imagine the type of crap I've heard. Some even from my own family... I know what I've had to go through so I don't let the negative comments get to me. ;)

Trust me, you don't need to be younger to get those type of comments. I am in my early 40's and own my own business and will never drive the Viper to work again. The one time I did, about every other customer made some off handed comment like "well I guess I paid too much" ....
Either way, you will never change it. It is part of dealing with the public and lack of common sense.

Welcome to the Viper world.
Amen,
I rarely take any of the snakes to work. My employees know we have 3 and are cool with it (they are well compensated and feel wanted) but some of our patients have made comments the few times I've driven a car to work. We (Wife and I) figure after nine years in college and taking all the risks as business owners we should be able to drive to work in what we please, but after the office manager said we got 3 comments in one morning about 'the doc's car' I made the decision to do it rarely. I drive a Mini to work everyday.

I'm 27 and I get it from time to time, normally I hear the remark "Daddy must have bought it for him" I just respond no I'm just a successful engineer.

Ha, I'm the same age with the same occupation. I've gotten "so, it looks like daddy let you take his car out" before. I like just smiling back. Either that or they love it when I tell them I paid cash for the car.

Quit being such ******* about it. Why wouldn't somebody think you're a spoiled rich kid? There are a helluva lot more spoiled rich kids with nice cars than self-made 25-year-old millionaires. So you didn't like being stereotyped, quit being a crybaby whimp about it and take it like a man. Instead of acting like a spoiled brat about it, act like a reasonably wise individual and understand why somebody would think it.

He did act like a reasonably wise individual and educated a business owner of his improper judgement. He then chose to spend his dollar somewhere else. The only one out of line here was the bitter older shop owner. Touch a nerve Chuck?

I'm 33, and paid cash for mine as well. If they are actually rude about it, which they usually are not, I will just say image what i'll be driving when I'm your age.

I am 27 and look somewhat young for my age and get **** like this all the time. I get the same thing about my house. I actually enjoy doing my own yard work. My neighbors had a guy working in their yard and he said to me "Got you working hard huh?" I said what?? This is my house, then he well what do you do to afford all that (as he looked at the Viper in the driveway). I said well.... I don't smoke cigarette's. That always gets them going.

I'm 27 now and don't have a house, wish I did... haha. You spoiled punk!

Well, I am here in Korea (car is at my bros). Some people know I have a Viper because I have a few friends that were from my last base here, so of course they talk about it. I honestly hate talking about it, unless with another car enthusiast. I say the same thing though, I don't smoke or get wild drunk every day like over half the population here. Not to mention I ride a bike instead of taking a taxi everywhere which is at least $3 (for a 10 minute walk).

Back when I first got it I always heard, "You have rich parents, don't you?" Hahah, grew up eating mayonaise sandwiches to survive.... I got it when I was 24... I wish I waited for a better taken care of ride. Mine was really cheap at the time though.

Hey Chiefchad, where abouts in Ontario do you live? Im in southern myself. And it so happens im still looking to get some exhaust work done. Where abouts is your buddies shop?
And as for this topic, i see im not the only one. Thats good. But i didn't think i would be. Jealousy is every where.
I have got the , dads car and dont you think its time to bring dads car home, a couple times too. But it is what it is.
The first time i took it to work, people were like ***. I didn't tell anyone i was buying it. Just incase deals fell through. I got alot of rassing, and the main boss even came out to question me. He was like nice car, but how do you aford that, i know what i pay you. I can't aford that or the up keep on that. So what else are you doing??? I just smiled and said what are you talking about i just work here (big grin on my face)
Like everyone else is saying, people dont realize that these car can be affordable. They look at them as the price they were new. Now that would make it out of reach for me. But i do make good money, i just got married and have have no kids (none in the future either, wife is a ok with that) and we live in a moddest house with a nice garage for my toys. Not some big fancy thing like most of the people that i work with. Nice big house driving a rust bucket everyday. NOT for me.
Oh ya, and it helps that the wife has a really good job as well.

I am from the Oshawa/Port Perry area. The shop and owner I was talking about is in Scarborough. He owns a Viper and deals mainly with Magnaflow but would do any setup you wish. He does alot of high end stuff and has had involvement with several TV car shows. , if this was the shop you went into, he probably was just joking around - he is a young guy too that did well for himself and would get the same comments as we all do. If this wasn't the shop and you are interested then I can PM you the details for an estimate from him if you wish.

No, he replied with, "who the f are you talkin to."

I just can't imagine why it would be such a big deal for someone to assume that about a youngster. Or maybe it really isn't a big deal to them, they just wanna let everyone know how young and successful they are so they come on here complaining about something trivial like that. Gawd knows we get enough "Who's the youngest Viper owner" threads.

It was disrespectful and an improper assumption that cost the business current and clearly future sales.

I get asked all the time, as I work at two small family businesses. I pick my spots to be a Dick to who's asking.

Wait til you buy a lambo. You'll get it 10 times as bad and you'll get people stalking you on the freeway and following you every where you go...

I've run into all types of questions as to why I drive the cars I have, the cost, how did I get them, etc. I have come up with and been using what I feel is the perfect response for the last 2 years. It shuts people up, makes dudes envious and stops further questions. So when somebody asks how I got my vehicle, the answer is very simple....."A very generous Cougar"

Cheers,
George

Chuck pump the brakes a little, i wasn't starting this thread to bost about how successful i am, cause im far from it, nor do i think anyone on here is doing that. I was just talking about something that happened to me and felt like starting a thread. And as far as me being unreasonably as you put it, if you go back and read my first post you would see where i wrote "Normally i let stuff like that slide, but it was his tone and how he said it that pissed me off" Maybe you missed that line. So ya, normally i just laugh or give a one liner back and move on when this happens. But i didn't that day. It is what it is.

I'm 24 and get it sometimes, but surprisingly not as much as others it seems... if it's a stranger I just say I have no parents and worked my ass off and leave it at that, stops any arguments before starting any.

Well, even at 50 I still get a comment or two. My response is always "no wife, no kids." They always seem to have a look of understanding after that.

beside those usual "daddy's car" and whatnot, the worst I can remember was someone saying "strong midlife crisis"

coming from someone probably the same age as me (27 yo), I was confused

it's also funny everyone that talks about vipers have always driven one... who the hell lends their vipers to anybody :p

I've never gotten one of those comments; had a GTS at 24, Murci at 26.

It's usually "what do you do?"

I haven't gotten exactly that, but I have had people ask me what the hell I'm gonna do when I actually have my mid-life crisis since I already have the Viper. :)
I usually tell them it will be TT Viper, L car or F car by that time. Then again, I hope to have one of those as well before my true mid-life crisis.
I guess another way I cna look at it is that with all the stupid I **** I do, I might actually be in the mid-life age for ME. lol

I'm 27 and I've yet to get that comment from my SRT-10.

Although when I was 20 I bought a '99 Corvette C5 and was doing something when an older gentlemen came up and said, "It's awfully nice of your dad to let you drive his car."
