I did Pikes Peak over 10 years ago with no issues, it ran a little warm at lower altitudes but the gravel part of the drive was slower and cooler. I did come down too fast and had the park ranger make me wait in a parking lot for my brakes to cool down. I believe he said that they were over...
The Vmax gets the most miles and the Kubota gets the most hours. I have two miles of gravel on my 16 mile commute, takes 18 min. each way. Old GMC van for snow days which is just a half dozen or so here.
I have been using Amsoil 75-90wt gear lube for nearly 50K miles, I think the gear box runs a little cooler. Only down side is hard to get into second when the temps are freezing until the oil warms.
Craig, you might want to check the wiring and placement of the VEC, it might be getting too hot and acting up or maybe a bad connection. I'm guessing but that could mess with the output to the speedo
Just got mine for $691, here are a couple of photos of the collector. The tubes are 1 3/4" not 2 3/4" and all headers have to restrict their exhaust flow down to whatever your exhaust it, 2 1/2, 3 or 4 inches. Five 1 3/4" tubes have the same area as one 3.91" tube.
You may have just evaporated the water and unburnt gas out of the oil. I have a 97' and it has always had drive-train lash that is most noticeable in 6th on level highways using the cruise control.
