Re: 3:55\'s on SRT...first imperssion

I gotta say that the 3:55's make the SRT a very, very different car. Much more responsive and SOTP feel is definitely stronger. First gear winds up quick/second gear launches the car down the road and third literally explodes. Fourth pulls the car up to its limits on local roads and fifth and sixth are now definitely cruising gears.
And when you drop from fourth to second with a Belanger exhaust system you can break glass at 25 yards!

Great mod JonB...Thanks for the advice :2tu: . Exactly why I continue to buy from you...your ideas make me smile...a lot.

After putting about 150 miles on my SRT10, I can now see why you guys went for the gear change. It needs it bad! Does anybody know of a shop in northern Indiana that can do this swap? I called a couple places and nobody wants to touch a new Viper, not even the dealer
Steve Fess, did you have rear gears installed in any of your cars? Can you point me in the right direction for a shop? :2tu:

Agree with the Gen II poster, these are really needed on SRT-10 - I drove a friend's SRT-10 last week and, comparatively speaking, it felt like it was bogging down. My RT/10 has the 3.54's and feels much quicker, altho' the SRT definitely feels stronger from around 3500 RPM. This may be perceptual since I've not actually run a 1/4 mile track with either.
When I get my SRT/GTS, this will be my first mod. :2tu:

So what is the 3.55 swap going to do to the top end?

Will the car still be able to go 180mph+?

Anyone know what the top speed is with the gear swap?

What about 1/4 mile times?

Kai...

Gear/RPM -- velocity (MPH) with 3.55's.
1st 6000 -- 52 mph
2nd 6000 -- 77 mph
3rd 6000 -- 106 mph
4th 6000 -- 138 mph (notice: 4th gear still has headroom for the 1/4 should you decide to do power mods at a later date!)5th 6000 -- 184 mph
6th 4000 -- 184 mph

The car should be able to hit right at 180 mph with a 3.55 swap and 1/4 mile traps should improve by 3/10's or so. All six gears will now become usable below hyper speeds. Once this mod is completed you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner ... I know I did. There are no real drawbacks to making the change except for about a 10 mph reduction in top speed. You can thank the .50 6th gear ratio for the top end penalty.

Hope this helps! :2tu:

Re: 3:55\'s on SRT...first imperssion

Thanks for the information. I guess I've got another mod on my list now. My wife is starting to wonder just what this "Parts Rack" thing is that keeps showing up on our credit card bill, and why I keep pouring money into a brand new car that is still under warranty.

A little math provides the following comparison, but I can't quite figure out what's going on in 5th and 6th:

Gear/RPM -- velocity (MPH) with 3.55's and with stock 3.07.
1st 6000 -- 52 mph ---- 60 mph
2nd 6000 -- 77 mph ---- 89 mph
3rd 6000 -- 106 mph ---- 123 mph
4th 6000 -- 138 mph ---- 160 mph
5th 6000 -- 184 mph ---- ?212 mph??
6th 4000 -- 184 mph

I'm wondering if the 3.55 gear swap will help me in the Sand Hills one mile shoot-out this August. Seems like it might improve the standing mile times. I'm only hoping to get to about 160mph or so, and by your calculations, I should still be able to get to 160 in 5th gear.

I guess I won't be doing any more 0-60 runs all in first gear, however. I suppose I will have to learn how to shift faster.
