Are Gen II wheels clearcoated?

I have a '97 GTS (I believe these are forged vs. the cast ones from the '96) and was just wondering whether our 17" stockers came clearcoated from the factory or not. Anyone know?

How can you tell if a wheel is cast or forged?

The polished wheels are all Powder Coated with a clear coat. Some people remove this and polish the wheels but I don't know why?? I am in need of a fron 10 x 13 Polished "Forged" wheel if you have one!!

Meguires Scratch X works great on the clearcoat on Viper wheels to remove fine scratches in the clearcoat. Be advised that the operative word is FINE. It will do nothing for a neglected wheel.

You can tell a forged wheel from the back side I believe

The weld bead is the dead giveaway.

What is the safe way to take the clear coat off the wheels? Can you use regular polish/wax on them after the clear is removed?

Try these threads. I started one about a month ago. In the first thread, EllowViper wrote an excellent summary of how he stripped and polished his rims. Hope this helps...
