The Porsche GT2 eclipsed our previous 0-to-60-
mph record, set by the 911 Turbo at 3.94 seconds,
with a blistering 3.67-second run to 60 mph. It flew
through the quarter-mile in 12.01 seconds at 118.5
mph, too, again putting the Turbo in second place
with its 12.37-second run at 112.8 mph. The next
closest car was the Corvette Z06 at 4.31 seconds to 60
and the quarter-mile in 12.73 at 112.1. Everything
else slides off from there - even the mighty Ferrari
360 Modena now seems lethargic at 4.92 seconds to
60 and 13.45 at 105.7 in the quarter-mile.
We don't test for top speed but Porsche's claimed
195 mph would make it 'numer eins' there, too.
Those are the numbers, but the feel of going that
fast is so unlike any other street car we've ever driven
that the brain has to recalibrate everything it's used to
calibrating from behind the wheel. Launching from a
stoplight you have to think two or three blocks down
the road if you plan to leave your foot on the e-throt-
tle for more than a few brief seconds. And watch the
tach, since you'll run out of first gear pretty darn
quick. Second gear, too. By the time you run out of
third you're going 101 mph. Words fail; even Great
Jumpin' Catfish and Aiye Chihuahua are not enough.
How does the GT2 do it? The basic recipe for this
car is to take the 911 Turbo and remove the front half
of the all-wheel drive. That and eliminating the rear
seats and the spare tire lops off 220 pounds and puts
all the power at the rear wheels where you can play
around with it. Then retune the 3.6 liter, flat-six turbo
engine to handle more maximum boost, from 11.76
psi to 14.5 for a new power peak of 456 hp and 457 from
8.2 pounds/hp in the Turbo to 6.9 in the GT2. Ole!
And it's not like the old 935 Turbos; this one is
easy to back out of the driveway and go to the gro-
cery store. It's manageable.
The new Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes
were only slightly les awe-inspiring, bringing the
GT2 from 60 mph to a stop in 114 feet. Had this been
any other car we would have enthused about that
figure, but in the rarified air of this supercar we were
hoping for a sub-100-foot figure. The Z06 still holds
the record at 105 feet from 60, followed by the BMW
Z8 and 911 Turbo at 109 and 110 feet respectively.
Likewise, the GT2 slalom performance was
superb, winding through our eight cones at 47.1 mph
with stability and stick almost unmatched, but it
wasn't the absoute record. Thatwent to the Turbo at
48.1 mph, followed by the F355 Ferrari at 47.22.
Yes, we are spoiled, and to find fault in such a
magnificently engineered machine seems like nit-
picking, especially since it is so close to being the
best in every category. We are just barely disappoint-
ed wotj tje GT2 not because it isn't as wonderful
as we had hoped (ohmygosh it is), but vecause it
isn't the very best in every category we test. How
many of us were disappointed when Marion Jones
wpm "only" three golds in Sydney instead of the five
we expected? Man, are we ever spoiled.
