Anyone crazy enough to consider modifying a GTS for AWD?
Would the following transmission work? http://www.quaifeamerica.com/transmissions/4x4/27G4x4.htm
What would be required?

Thanks.

I was with Mazda Competition when Rod Millen built his 4WD RX-7 rally car. The conversion is relatively simple in spirit but rather intensive in execution. The biggest challenge is space. The motor is right where you want the front differential, and there is no room in the transmission tunnel for the transmission/transfer case and extra driveline.

GTS Dean is right on. You can lift the motor and put the diff under it (dry sumping the engine helps minimize the lift). Or, you can slide the motor back far enough to allow the diff in front of it. Like I said, simple in theory, really difficult in execution.

If wheelspin is the issue, then traction control is a MUCH more practical alternative. Any of the following sources can provide a system for less than the cost of many Viper upgrades.

Why bother? Unless your doing World Rally the rears are more than enough to propel you at loose-you-license speeds. You just have to get used to the clutch.

Its an interesting idea, but unless you just hit the last powerball its really not worthwilde...

Hate to burst your bubble with a dose of reality, but it's not gonna happen. Where's the front diff going to go? How will you get halfshafts thru the engine block and frame out to the wheel hubs?

I guess it would work if you managed to put a hydrostatic drive setup on the front wheels, but then you'd need a BIG pump and hydraulic reservoir.

Yes....a mid engine Viper... but then where would you sit, in the trunk

And for that matter, if you look at the gear box... where would your passenger sit? All that power and four wheel drive, you would HAVE to be carrying a passenger to show off....
