Does anyone have any experience with wrapping the cats to reduce (restrict)heat, or will it restrict air flow and cause other problems?

Appox. 1 year ago I converted my GTS to Gen1 side exhaust. I stayed with the factory cats and used aftermarket mufflers. I wrapped the cats and the mufflers with aluminized asbestos-like cloth. I left both ends open for heat escape. To date, I have had no problems and I live where it REALLY gets hot. I used a infra red thermometer on my side sills the other day (ambient temp 105F ) and over the cats it was 160F, over the muffler it was 110F and the side pipe was 365F. I can't speak for others, but I am pleased with my results. I have all fresh paint on the side sills and wanted to protect it. :p

I wrapped mine in butcher paper and threw them in the corner of the garage. Much cooler.

How hard are the cats to remove on a 97 GTS? Are there o2 sensor issues?

Sawsall to remove cats and mig welder to replace with straight pipe. And no, a 97 will not have o2 issues.
