The im gasket would break down over time and begin to leak air. Not a good thing and you should be preventative and change them out. If you have a friend at the dealer, see if they can’t get it covered under the TSB for it. Otherwise, the gasket cost should be minimal. The labor is to loosen and raise the im. Only disconnect the things you need to raise the im up 8 inches or so. You don’t need to disconnect every last thing from the im and totally remove it from the car. I think the bad gaskets were labeled “194F”.

If the engine feels like it is missing at times, the intake manifold gaskets could be leaking. Take a good look at the gaskets, which are viewable between the intake manifold and the heads. If the gaskets look "wavy", versus straight, you may have a problem.

Jon you say "all 97 Viper built before 11/97" have a bad gasket. Does this also include the 96's? I.E. all gen II before 11/97.
