If your not really picky about size...

Here's the summary: http://tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+Cup

Those that have bought them and rate them prefer them to Hoosiers (and over all competition tires rated): http://tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/comp.jsp

Front options:

285/30YR18 $301
285/30YR18 $316 Heat Cycled
295/30YR18 $312
295/30YR18 $327 Heat Cycled **

Rear Option:
345/30-18 $369

These aren't exactly stock sizes, but they are very close and allow you to maximize the tire up sizing by 20MM in 10MM increments in SCCA T1 more than Hoosiers. The Hoosier options are below:

Front Options:

275/35ZR18 $247
275/35ZR18 $262 Heat Cycled
285/30ZR18 $263
285/30ZR18 $278 Heat Cycled **
295 == NOT AVAIL. ==

Rear Options:

335/30ZR18 $301 ** (for comparison purposes)
335/30ZR18 $310 Heat Cycled
345 == NOT AVAIL. ==

Total cost of what my preferred set of each (marked with ** would be $1392 for Pilot Sports and $1,158 - a difference of $234 per set or ~17%.

So, you can cost justify ~3% of the increase cost for increased tire size alone so now we are 14% higher for Michelin Pilot Sports (MPS).

MPS is rated higher on wet traction and hydro resistance (for those session where the rain is threatening but not enough for full rains). To me thats worth 5%.

Higher cornering stability and Steering response another 5% to me.

Finally, tread wear...6.9 vs. 4.2 out of a possible 10. MPS wins by a landslide. Thats a 27% higher treadlife rating.

The word on the "street" is that the Hoosiers are "stickier" and don't last as long. Science would seem to support that logic.

The MPS appears to be a more well rounded competition tire that is overall less expensive to run while providing enhanced performance characteristics under less than ideal (read anything but dry) conditions. The larger tires 285 vs 295 front and 335 vs 345 rear would also lead me to beleive the performance gap would be narrowed bring the MPS closer to the front.

I think I'm going to have to order a set of MPS for some track events. I'll let you know my novice impressions afterwards.
