Gents, have oil changes sheduled for both my silver bullets tomorrow early. I want to pick up the oil on the way home (no manual handy), just want to double check, that the '05 Viper is Mobil 1's 0W-40?

Does anyone know if the SRT8s use the same?

I use 0w40 now with my 2003. It offers higher high temp viscosity than 10w30. It seems to be a win-win.

Factory fill for everything up to and including 2004 is Mobil 1 10W-30. Mobil 1 0W-40 for 2005 and 2006.

Why the change?
Engine schematics were the same...........

Thanks
Patrick

Actually they are not, the main bearings got changed in the later engines. Went to a 180 degree groved main bearing from the previous 120 degree groved bearing set. Daniel Lesser could provide more insight if needed.

Also, the oil pressure at idle is different on my dads 05 and my 06, then some friends 03's. I noticed that mine and my dads idle at 25-30 psi and the earlier cars did more like 50psi at idle. So there could be other differences that I dont know about that is doing this, or it could be the viscosity of the oil doing it(I doubt it).

I do not believe that the bearings were the sole reason to do it, I think its got more to do with the availability of that oil. Back in 03 I never saw a 0w-40 offering in synthetic. I think Dodge sees the value in the wider range, and changed accordingly. I'd think it would be perfectly fine to use the 0w-40 in the older cars, but I wouldnt claim to be an authority on such.

Here in the UK its difficult to get any 10/30. Main dealers use Mobil 1 in 0/40 fully synth and my 04 runs fine on this. Newer Corvettes run this also with no problems although book says 10/30 for them.

There were other posts about this that specifically warned against using 0-40 in 03's and 04's, I am just too lazy to go look for them...

0-40w is fine for the Viper, but will check ,as the 5.7 Hemis should only have 5-20W. Not sure on the 6.1 , off the top of my head , but will check and post in a bit.
