Greetings from beautiful downtown Rainbow City, AL

I've been following the discussion board for about a year, but I've never seen any information on peak torque and horsepower in Gen I engines.

At what RPM(s) does the engine develop these 2 distinct forces?

I'm sure someone out there has that information.

Thanks....

Hi, Don!

I don't know about all Gen I cars but my peak hp is at 5000 rpms and peak torque is at 3700 rpms. Probably about the same for most Gen I's. With the hp and torque my car makes, my shift points are suppossed to be 1st to 2nd-5800rpms, 2nd to 3rd-5600rpms, and 3rd to 4th-5400 rpms to get the best 1/4 mile.

Thanks Matt for your answer.

To be quite honest, I've really been afraid to push mine beyond about 4600 RPM's. It makes so much noise that it sounds like the pistons are about to change holes!

Bill-You were right, I had my hp and torque switched. My original post is now correct. My max rwhp is 404 and rwtorque is 502. At 2500 rpms, my rwhp is 215 and rwtorque is 452. And Don, if your car sounds like that at 4500 rpms, you better have it checked! My car just starts sounding mean at 4500 rpms.

You'll learn to love that sound Don! Your car is fine being pushed past 4500, it will cut out at 6200 or so if you push it too far. Like Matt, I find best ET's shifting around 5500 on average. Of course my car has Nitrous so I get a little extra punch (OK a lot of extra punch) at lower RPMs. Otherwise our cars are similar.
