Plastic film on Chassis?

As the title says, under the engine, left and right, on my 2000 GTS there is a piece of plastic film on the main chassis rails, about 6 inches long.

Its now starting to look rippled and stained. What's it for, has anyone out there removed it or replaced it?

Mine was all tattered and nasty so I removed it. I don't do a lot of mudding so I figured it was OK. ;-)

I removed the plastic and made stainless sheet covers that are attached with clear RTV. They look a lot better and will still collapse when it needs to.
