I am going to change plugs How should I remove the heat shields?

I've changed my plugs several times, and did not have to remove the heat shields. Not sure what year your car is, if that matters.

When I did my plugs on my 2005 Viper I simply removed the plug heat shields with my bare hands or loosened them with pliers with back and forth rotation.
