I am in the process of replacing the head gaskets. I have removed the nuts and washers holding the heat shields in place on the exhaust manifolds. How do I get them out without destroying them.

They should come out from the top side and you will need to move the plastic HVAC system to get the passenger side out. I would wear some type of leather gloves because the shield on the edges are sharp and can cut your finger.

They are only layers of foil and fiber. They can bend quite a bit and you won't hurt or tear them. Pretend you're taking off a coat, one sleeve (stud) at a time. If I remember, the part wrapped around the collector portion needs to be straightened a bit to pull them up and out. When you put them back on, you can push them into place to fit again.
