TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
NUMBER 07 – 2
Date: May 7, 2007
Subject: Spark plugs
Recent dynamometer testing and examination of spark plugs removed from service after the Sebring, Florida race indicate the heat range of the current Competition Coupe spark plug – Champion RC12ECC has marginal safety from pre-ignition problems.
There have been no instances of engine damage or failure due to pre-ignition reported from the field using EC12ECC plugs. However, it is recommended that a colder plug, preferably a design with a precious metal fine wire center electrode that is at least a range colder be used in its place to improve the safety margin. One such plug is the Champion RC7PYCB4. These plugs are in stock and available through EPP. This plug has a shorter nose projection, which may degrade idle stability. The platinum fine wire should help offset this tendency.
