This didn\'t happen to me last year.........Please help.

Last year I was approached from a guy that told me how impressive my car was going down the track, and that when I would shift, there wasn't a hint of any smoke coming from the tail pipes........

Well, Now there is

Yesterday I was cruizin' with another GTS, He was behind me on the on-ramp to a freeway when I got on it pretty hard. He said that there was black smoke coming from the tail pipe after every shift. *** ??

Too rich maybe ?? How can this be corrected ??

Yep, to rich. Black smoke is fuel. Nothing to worry about. Worry about blue or greyish white smoke. If it really bothers you you could buy an Apexi AFC, but I personally don't like them. Had one in my supra and it was junk. Just my .02 Drew

Other manufacturers have something similar to Apexi's AFC, though (right??).

Considering your car is stock or close to it, it can only be severals things

1) O2 sensors-and probably your problem
2) Pluged cats-probably not your problem
3) Bad map sensor

I cant think of anything else. Definatly try the 02 sensors first.

PS. You may want to try and reset the ECU also.

Good Advice Russ, I was POURING out black smoke one day and panicked! Put new O2 sensors on car... just fine now..

Do you get a check engine light? O2's will throw a code..
When is the last time you changed your plugs or wires?

Nope....... no codes.

I haven't changed the plugs/wires, but when I bought it 12ooo miles ago, they were supposedly new.

Time to replace ??

I wouldn't worry if the smoke is in between shifts. As long as it doesn't smoke at start up or cruising I think it's fine.

There's a front and a back O2 sensor. I'm assuming there's 4 total. right ?

Would that mean to change all of'em ??

Dan, if you want to see what's causing it, do just the fronts. They are the ones that the ECU looks at to regulate the fuel flow, the rear O2 sensors are only being used to compare their signal to the front O2 signals. This comparison is how the ECU checks if the catalyst is working properly.

Bad rear O2 sensors won't make the engine run rich, only bad front ones.

Dan,

To reset the ECU just disconect the power cable on the drivers side of the car by the ECU. It has a big red handle looking top on it. Unplug it for 15 min or so, then just plug it back in. That should put the car back into learn mode.

If it persists, I bet you can dial it out with a properly set VEC1. Getting my VEC1 set up right on a dyno eliminated the little sooty bits deposited on my back bumper, and stopped the extremely-rich conditions at WOT.

The O2 sensors do not read the exhaust at wide open throttle. They are only used for feedback at part-throttle. In other words, wide open throttle is an open-loop condition and part-throttle is a closed-loop condition. I don't know why your car is having black smoke out the exhaust other than being rich for some reason but if there are no O2 fault codes I would not change the sensors.

Better yet, without spending a chunk of change and going at it hit and miss, get a hold of a friend with a scanner and look at the operational data.
That will help you pinpoint what's going on. 96's do have OBD-II connector's don't they?
