About to change the oil and filter for the first time on my viper. Will be sticking with 'Mobil 1' as my oil brand for now and will stick with the Mobil 1 filter as well unless someone knows of anything significantly better.

Is the mobil 1 filter Mobil 1 filter the one most are running on their vipers? Any of the major dscounters running any deals on oil and filter purchases?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

VCA has Mopar oil filters available for $3.00 ea.

Stick to Mobil 1 oil. It is fantastic, and I have heard of no oiling issues with it.

Other premium oils have their following, but Mobil 1 is in the vast majority of Vipers.

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

I ran Mobil 1 in my Jeep, no oil burning or gas mileage loss after 186,000 miles when I sold it, and also in my F150, still running tight as a drum after 178,000 miles. I swear by it! I like to use the Mobil filter also, Wix or Mopar are fine, just stay away from Fram and Purolator.

My Viper has about 39,000 miles, always used Mobil 1. Last plug change showed a very clean combustion chamber.

Is the mopar oil filter what most guys are using?? Is it as good as the moibl 1 filter? It certainly is less expensive at about 1/3 the price.

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

The Mobil 1 filter is the best one made. I read an extensive article where they tested every known filter and Mobil 1 was the best. They said other brands were very good as well at 1/2 the cost, but I stick with Mobil 1 in all my cars including the Vette and Viper. It might be overkill in my truck but I feel like I am doing something good for the engine.

Does Mobil one put 0-40 in the 5 quart jugs? It was weird to see Chad use the word "jugs" and not have it be about *******. How can I get the Mopar filters from VCA? Thanks

BRRRRRRR it's 12 degress here this morning.

BoeingMan, the correct Mobil oil filter for ALL Vipers is M1-204. Around here, you will find them at AutoZone for about $10.99.

I have used them for all of our Viper for many years...no complaints.

Some like the K&N filter as well...and, it does have the handy lug on the bottom that fits a wrench.

The micron version of the Purolator is Viper blue....complete with the metallic !!

I'm going to start putting white stripes on my filter

Pity the CNet geek who took his pants off in the mountains.

I know...that's about 80 miles from here. The cold makes you do weird things. He is probably a goner. Only the main roads around here are fit for travel after the middle of November unless you are riding a snowmobile. :bonker:

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

i use mobil one 10w 30 for the viper...and 0w 40 for my expedition, and yes they sell the 0w 40 in jugs at walmart! in ohio they are closer to $26 though :(

for my filters i go to napa and buy the napa gold...with my discount they are like 3-4 dollars...they are made by wix...excellent filters!!

if you like nascar, you''ll notice all the cars run wix filters :2tu:

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

If you're in Indianapolis you're probably changing the oil for winter storage. Why not just put cheap(er)non-synthetic oil in it for the winter, then put the good stuff in it next Spring?

- Like I just finished doing.

You wouldn't want to leave synthetic oil in it next driving season that'd been sitting in the pan all winter.

"Synthetic oil...sitting in the pan all winter" is fine with me...I have been doing for many years in our Vipers...and, our Vipers are all FINE...with excellent oil analysis results in each one (performed on every oil change).

In fact, I would NOT leave non-synthetic oil in all winter as one would have far less friction protection on initial startup...especially without a pre-oiler or similar manual pre-oiling procedure.

Synthetic oil is cheap compared to the cost of "lack of protection" in a Viper... in my opinion.

Actually new oil that has been sitting for six months won't bother
the motor one bit - its leaving the old oil in for six months that
can seriously damage internals. Its all about the acid build-up. In
a plastic jug or alum motor synthetic oil doesn't rot... at least
not in the time frame we're discussing. I would be more concerned
with putting any organic oil in the motor - not saying there is any
harm, but at $40 why bother taking the chance with a $8500 (pricey)
motor. Now if we were discussing corvettes it would be a different
story.

Re: Time for Oil and Filter

Thanks guys good info. Sticking with both mobil 1 oil and oil filters. Thanks for the info on where to purchase as well. Here in Indi, 5 qrt jugs going for $22 at walmarts. The filters were $10 at advance auto. Wasn't able to find any deals on free filters with synthetic oil purchase this week.

..You should hope for an engine as sophisticated as a Z06 (titanium connecting rods, dry sump oil system..etc)

There was a different Z06 at the strip every time I went in the last few months doing at least 11.9 quarters @ 125mph on street tires, - regardless of the driver's abilities.
