What kind of filter is this ?????

Being new to the Viper world means discovering all kinds of interesting aspects to this car...like when I received the smooth tubes & filters from Roe (1 day, very nice) I thought, well, I put filters in everything even if I don't really feel a big difference.......until now when I cracked open the vipers airbox, WHOA...what IS THIS ??? A one inch thick & sticky black dense foam OVER the one inch thick filter media ?? I could not see light or feel air through it. Is this the normal filter setup or did I get some kind optional desert duty package ?? The Roe filters will be a difference I'm sure I will feel....

Anyway, so far this car is amazing...love the cam in this thing

It's a factory filter. Later years they left the foam off.
