Why doesn\'t my temp gauge work anymore?

Yesterday I jumped in my car and the temp gauge immediately went to 220+. The car was cold so there was no way it is that hot. Then today I turned the car on completely cold and it went all the way to the right..any ideas?

May be worth checking out the sender unit/sensor, I'm not near my manuals, but it should give the proper resistance when cold. Maybe just unplug and replug the unit for a start.

If the sending unit wire is unplugged or cut, gauge should read low. If it's grounded (rubbed through and touching metal) it should read high. Immediately, like as fast as electrons go.
