Almost lost it..my drivers side wheel sheered off at 60mph,
how i didnt write off the car is a miracle, the bolts sheered off,
the wheel moved out, but never left the car, the disc and caliper
sat down on the inner base of the wheel and held on to it,
it was just a couple of inches from flying off down the road,

only thing mashed is the inner wheel paint, and a couple of studs snapped,
should be able to sort that though.

how it happened i have no idea, i tighten my nuts regularly.

Re: Almost disaster....

Sheering off a 6-lug is pretty extreme-- I'd be worried that all the lug nuts on every wheel got way over-torqued at some point in the car's life, cracking the studs. Air driver set to 125+ ft-lbs torque might possibly do this. I've seen Grade 8 and higher bolts snap at 30-40% over their normal torque, but they are already stretching at 20-25% over the torque spec.

Wow. Glad you and the Vipes came out OK. That happened to me once back in the day. Saw my life flash in front of me.

Re: Almost disaster....

can new studs be purchased, or do i need a new hub?

The wheel studs are replaceable, MSRP is $17.10 each in the US, but the online places sell 'em for $11-12 each approx.

Don't know if you've looked but there may be some damage to other components that hit the wheel, such as the caliper, or the wheel itself. :omg:

Re: Almost disaster....

Like Sonoman suggested in his post, I would replace all of them, at all four corners.

Not that you heard it here, but someone may have done that to you. I find it very strange that ALL of them let go. Don't you think it is strange? Really?

Yikes.... I bet that tightened more than your nuts....... Seems strange... you see cars all the time running around missing two of five lug nuts..... but all six go at once??? How much life insurance do you have and who is the beneficiary....I'd start there...... Glad you are OK!!!

I also smell sabotage....

got the hub off, no damage anywhere other than the studs and scratched up inside the wheel,

which ive already sanded down and painted

Also check tire wear tie rods and wheel bearings. I've seen a few vehicles in the past have bad wheel bearings and have lugs come loose. I believe this to be the extreme temp change due to high friction.

Re: Almost disaster....

You say you were going about 60 mph, I assume you were going straight or were you cornering?

Did you recover the old lugs on the studs? Can you post a close-up picture of them?

Re: Almost disaster....

As noted by one individual I would really check the rim. I could be hogged at at all the holes from the loose studs and be of questionable use itself?
