1.) I recently had a new clutch/pressure plate/TO bearing installed, and the mechanic told me the clutch inspection cover was damaged. It was only being held on by one bolt (should be four). Apparantly, this is pretty common via a previous post I read from Chuck Tator. Anywho, what purpose does this part serve? In other words, can I drive my car without it? It's a cheap part (+/- $50), but I'm just curious... There's a picture at the bottom.
2.) Is it possible this part could have been rubbing against the flywheel making the noise I referred to in this post (click on link)? I tend to think not, since the sound changed when pushing the clutch in/out. Not to mention the noise was present for a good while, and the metal on the clutch inspection cover is pretty thin. Seems if it was hitting the flywheel it would wear away fairly quick. Yes, I'm trying to convince myself I did not have a clutch kit installed for no good reason
