When I go to start my '96 gts, it feels like I have to push the clutch pedal through the floor to start the car. Could there be some type of problem with the safety system, or is this just a side effect of putting the pedals all the way back?

Clutch position switch may be bad...a search here will give insight into switch "adjustments", etc.

Dealer fix requires replacement of master cylinder/switch/reservoir/cap as a one piece item.

In an emergency, one can disconnect the switch, and place a small jumper wire on the harness-side plug.

The clutch sensor is actually very easy to remove. I have no idea why they say it has to be replaced with everything else. Probably because they make more money that way, right? Anyway, placing a small spring around the bottom of the clutch actuation rod fixes this problem. 10 minute job.
