There has been a lot of discussion about Mopar race calibrated engine controller....does it work? The following are two dyno runs on two Viper GTS, one a 1996 and one a 1999. Both were on the same dyno at Tom's Performance in Vancouver, WA. Dyno model 248c Chassis Dynomometer.

Car A belongs to Tony Cantafio....a 1996 GTS. Upgrades are:
K & N's smooth tube (KAX tubes)
1.7 roller rockers (Mopar)
Aluminum fly wheel
3:55 gears
KAX performance oil pan kit
Borla cat back exhaust

Car B belongs to Jay connelly...a 1999 GTS. Upgrades are:
K & N's smooth tubes (Mopar)
1.7 roller rockers (Mopar)
Hennessey cat back exhaust

I've only listed the upgrades that may change horsepower and torque from a stock Viper. Both cars were set up by me at Timberline Dodge.

Results:
Car A: (Tony's)
Barometric pressure 29.92 inches HG
Vapor pressure 0.30 inches HG
intake air temp 65.7 degrees F
Gear ratio 48 rpm/mph
Correction factor 0.97 SAE

With stock computer:
torque ft/lb 468.8
HP 435.9

With Mopar Computer
torque ft/lb 466.6
HP 426.3

Car B: (Jay's)
barometric pressure 29.56 inches HG
vapor pressure 0.13 inches HG
intake air temp 52.8 degrees F
gear ratio 42 rpm/mph
correction factor 0.97 SAE

With stock computer
torque ft/lb 476.7
HP 440.4

With Mopar computer
torque ft/lb 451.2
HP 417.0

As you can see both cars made more torque and HP on the stock computer. I called and talked to Mopar performance with these tests results. They said they had heard about problems, but these were the first dyno tests they had seen. They agreed the 50 HP and 25 ft/lbs torque did not hold up as advertised. Along with the idle problems, the computer is not doing its job.

My recommendation is to remove the performance computer and re-install your stock unit.

There are no plans at this time to make any changes to the computer by Mopar. I will be checking into the possiblity of a in the field reflash of the Mopar performance computer and will post more information when I have something to say about repair, replacement or a refund on your money.

Hi Ken, thanks for posting the results on Tony and Jay's cars. This info is important for the ensuing trash talk when I visit them at their home track at PIR. I am shooting to be there for the OR VCA track event in July. Reserve a bay for me at Timberline a couple of days before for some Klickman Viper Service.

I am having my car dynoed again this Saturday as well. I have the Mopar computer...I'll make a run with the stock one and post the results.

"had heard about problems, but these were the first dyno tests they had seen"

Are they kidding me?! A multi $$$ company doesn't run test of their own?! This isn't good for Mopar.

Just return the Mopar PCM if you're not happy with the results for a full refund within 30 days....

OOOPPPPSSS, wrong one! We're the ones with a satisfaction guarantee on our Viper Engine Calibrator, not Mopar. Sorry about that

I just put on my Mopar ECU and gave it 400 miles of "learn" time, my mods are listed below and I had her dynoed at the same shop with the ONLY difference being the ECU, here are some REALLY lousy #s:

Before ECU 421.1 RWHP 473.1 torque
After ECU 406.2 RWHP 452.4 torque

I lost 15 RWHP and 20 lb. ft. torque, I immediately removed the Mopar ECU and put on the stock unit, I have an appointment to re-dyno Monday 4/30, will post results.

Confirms my suspicions. My car always ran faster with the stock computer. I'm going to install the Roe controller thats been in the box since Christmas. Note: neither car had headers which could make a difference. But it wouldn't swing it back to a plus number.
