My experience...

1 - EBC red with original rotors = squeal

2 - EBC red with original rotors after rotor resurface = squeal

3 - Hawk Performance Ceramic pads with new rotors in front, original rotor in back, and dampening grease on the back of the pads as well as every other metal-to-metal surface = no squeal for the past 4 months.

So what ended the squeal? The new rotors in the front? The Hawk pads? The dampening grease? I'll never know but I don't care.

Just want to add that the only reason I swapped pads in the first place was to get rid of the squeal that had developed in the OE pads.

Prior to swapping pads, I read about 10 different "proceedures" for bedding pads and/or rotors and guess what. Everyone's proceedure is different.

I go thru this yearly with my aftermarket brakes. roe racing brake upgrade in front, brakeman#3 pads w/stock rear calipers. when placing in new pads , I put anti-sieze compound on all the contact points of the brakepads and this will eliminate that annoying ***** squeel immediately. it works for about 4-5 months and then you'll have the joy of doing it all over again. if you take the car to the track, you will have to do it sooner.

On my Gen II, OEM pads squealed and dusted like crazy.

Put the "new" EBC reds on, without resurfacing the rotors. Quiet and probably 75% less dust. 1,500 miles later, still quiet and very low dust. Needless to say, I'm VERY happy with this upgrade. :)

I have the EBC Reds and Stoptech rotors and never had a problem with noise, even after a few track events. Mine have been on the car for 1,500 miles.

Same here! Been very pleased with the EBC Reds/Stock rotors (installed 'em 1 1/2 ago, 3000 miles, a couple of track days). I was at least expecting a little more dust...not less! No squeal at all. Could be a Gen2 thing:dunno:, don't know.

I used to run EBC Green's and they squealed like crazy as well. It seems to be somewhat common with EBC pads, especially the Red's, as they are a track pad.

If you don't want squealing and want low dust, then you want to run a ceramic pad, like the Hawk Performance Ceramics. If you want some more stopping power, look afor the HPS or HP pads. Depends on whether you're going to track the car or not, because if you do, the Performance Ceramics aren't ideal.

Even though I "bedded" all the pads I used on the Viper, I have to wonder if bedding is just a myth or what. If it was necessary, then who "beds" the pads on new cars? Nobody does, yet 99.9% of all cars drive down the road squeak-free.

The pads squeal because of their compound, that's why.

FWIW, I've been running EBC Greens on my '04 SVT Focus for 9,000 miles now. No Squeal as of yet, though they do make plenty of dust.

I'd like to try the EBC Red pads next time around if they make less dust (and don't squeal!).

My problem with the EBC Greens was that they got so hot and they couldn't stand up the heat that they created, the pads would slightly melt and leave residue on the rotors. I went through three sets of rotors before I switched to cyrogenically frozen rotors. Even then, I had to get the rotors slightly turned (only removed .01" of material) and this is when the frozen rotor people told me the pads were leaving material on the rotor. After that I never used EBC pads again. Granted this was back in 2001, so I'm sure the compound has changed since then.

I'd like to try the EBC Red pads next time around if they make less dust (and don't squeal!).

Not that great of a pad for street driving, especially not in a focus which has smaller calipers. If you want a great weekend/street pad with low dust, look no further than Porterfield R4-S pads. :: #1 Race Specialist in The World :: »

Roe 14" lightweight front brake kit up front and 13" lightweight Stop-techs in back. Jonb sent me EBC REDS as the new EBC GREENS are really dusty (50mi and dusty rims). The EBC REDS are ceramics and I have never had any squeel from any of my brakes. I bedded them and the old rotors were the EBC GREENS (that are now the REDS).

I have two piece slotted rotors on the front. Brakeman 3's squealed a low speed coming to a stop. I now have EBC reds. Very, very faint cold squeal. Goes away when they heat up.

I have found that any harder - track type pad will squeal like a pig. It ***** !! It drives me nuts, but all I do is hit the brake harder, at the last minute, watch my rear view mirror, and put the radio louder. I tried the pencil trick, didn't last long. Now I have all new pads (brakeman) ready for a NJ track event. When I am done for the winter, I'm installing regular nice soft stock pads for next spring till I do another track event and will just keep switching pads. My track time is down somewhat anyway these days.

I might even glue in some nice shoe leather onto my calipers and use that for pads. I figure those shouldn't squeal. I'll just practice my downshifting.

As for brake dust, who cares, I keep the car clean anyway.

Dimitrios,

Sounds like you are experiencing the same thing I did a several months ago. I installed EBC Reds on my new 08 (4 miles) and bedded them as specifically as instructed. Even after 500 miles they squeeled AND dusted like mad.

Despite EBC's denial when contacted, there was evidently a "bad batch" of reds out there several months ago.

See Viper Specialty's post in this thread:

Brake Pads

I also posted in that thread my experiences with multiple brands of pads.

You can bed in the pads however you'll like, but they are still going to squeal. As I said above, it's the compound in the pad that makes them squeal and dust a lot. If you want a good street/weekend pad (although I think our stock pads are fine), with lower dust, then you need to look at a performance ceramic pad. EBC Reds and pads like that are really dedicated track pads, not really street pads.

I ran new/'08 EBC GREEN pads in the spring this year, then ran them at the track (PIR). As soon as I got home I ordered the new'08 EBC RED (or Ceramic pads) from Jonb and that's what's now on my 01 Viper GTS.

Last year I had Stop-techs and old EBC REDS on the car.

My 13" and the new 14" brakes have never squeeled, ever.

16,000miles on my Roe 14" front lightweight brakes this year. 42,000mi. on car as of VOI X.

Ditto. I always get flamed for saying it but that's my experience too. I'll never buy EBCs again.;)

Not me, but installed them with new stoptech two piece aerorotors and ss lines all at the same. Did you turn your rotors if they were not new when you intsalled them? That could be the cause..........

I put the Reds on my 08 at 5,000 miles. I followed the instructions to the letter. On my first trip which was 250 miles to Woodward Dream Cruise they Squealed like crazy and had more dust that the OEMS. I now have 6,800 miles and the dust has finally settled down but the squealing is still there. Not as bad but still annoying. I had the Reds on my Gen II and never had the problem in the 10,000 miles I had them on. If it is the compound, maybe I should return them and try a different brand. I will watch the forum to see how has the best recommendation for the 08.

The reds are a street/track pad. EBC's true track pad is the yellow.
